Motor Trend COTY
Motor Trend COTY
Motor Trend this year pick the Camry, ok.
The G was a "Finalist" so that was good.
But then reading the article what I find interesting is it appears one of the things that really hurt the G was the 6-speed.
"Nissan's 3.5-liter V-6 might be punchy, but it's a gruff old lump, sending lots of vibrations back through the shift lever of our six-speed manual tester. Worse, the engine's tendency to "hang" between shifts (to help meet emissions) and the sudden bite of the clutch made the G35 difficult to drive smoothly at slow to middling speeds."
So those of you with 6 speeds is this true? Now I wonder if they had an AT would the G have done better?
They also said "It's deliberately evolutionary, this new G35; a safety play. But to win COTY this time, Nissan needed something more revolutionary."
Sorry but the new Camry is revolutionary? If the Camry is then certainly the G is. What didn't Nissan change on the new G from the old?
The last comment "Refinement. That's the word most judges used to describe the new G35's missing ingredient." Ouch!
Again did the 6-speed have something to do with this statement?
Some other good points, the G was the 3rd fastest car behind the Porsche Cayman and Jaguar XKR.
The G also had the best 60-0 of 111 feet. They also loved the handling "it corner like a drift king". "It's a helluva sport sedan for the money."
Overall I think our G did very well!

It's just my opinion but I believe this new G is definitely more refined than the first gen. I could tell that during the test drive. I haven't driven a 6MT and I've heard conflicting stories. The weird thing is that some critics loved the gearbox! Yet, since intital reviews I haven't heard too many wonderful things about it.
^true the new G is much more refined. However in terms of refinement Toyota has it all over Nissan IMHO. The tables are turned when it comes to performance, handling and driving fun for an enthusiast which why many of us buy these cars.

In particular, I spend most of my commute creeping through traffic, and couldn't see doing it in this car.

It's NOT a G, but it's miles above what it replaces, and I reckon maybe that's what they were measuring?
I think your statement about performance over refinement is correct and agreed that is why some choose the G, but it also depends on the Magazine's criteria. Last year didn't MT award the COTY to a friggen Toyota ****-or Prius [whatever it’s called]...? Their’s a great choice for COTY
I did drive the 6-MT and I did not care for it was well; Infiniti could have done better for sure.
I would not be surprised if R&T and Automobile Magazine give the new G their awards along w/C&D as well. The Camry is definitely more refined than the G, but it also feels like its Mfg. by Rubbermaid as well.

I hate how on the Camry the metal of the hood or whatever goes under and around the T symbol on the front grill, it just looks stupid to me.
The G deserved the award more then the Camry anyway, but there has to be a car that deserved it more than that, I just can't see what brings the Camry above any other cars..
