Moving shift lever into D from P

Does anyone else have difficulty moving the shift lever into Drive? Most times mine is reluctant to go into gear on the first try. It almost feels like my foot isn't on the brake and the internal shift lock isn't releasing. I try to battle it for a second or two, then end up taking my foot off the brake and trying again.

I don't have that problem at all...

could be a genuine mechanical issue with your vehicle...are you sure you're fully squeezing the button on the front of the lever?

I agree with JMZ. If you are pressing the button on the lever and it still wont budge, I would take it in to see what the service guys can diagnose. You shouldn't have to fight anything moving the shifter from P to D.

Yeah, I pretty much knew I'd have to take it in.

Sorry you are having this issue on a brand new car! Let us know when you get it fixed. Hopefully this is an isolated incident (I know that doesn't help you, Bambeezer).

Try pushing down on the top of the shifter. Then shift.

The set screw that holds the top part of the shifter maybe slightly loose causing your problem.

When you go from P to D there is a tendancy to have an upward movement when you pull it towards you to get into D which is normal. With a loose set screw it will pull the top of the shift **** ever so slight upwards and the selector will not work properly.

The other thing is that it could be the release relay that works in conjuction with the break pedal which is also connected to the position of the key in the ignition.

If you are stuck and can't get the shift lever out of park, there is a 'release' you can do. The slot is just above the 'P' and you will need a thin screwdriver to mechanicly release the shiftlever....... See your manual for instructions.

Most important.... get your car into Infiniti.

Good luk with it all.

Try turning the wheel a bit before shifting, maybe that will help.

Is your parking brake set? Some times if you parked on an incline, the transmission will have a hard time getting out of park because of the weight of the car pushing against the locking pin when it's in park.

No parking brake or incline. I'll take it in after the holidays and report back. The shift lock linkage must be loose or something. Probably out of whack from all the hard cornering, braking, and accelerating.

It's possible that the shift interlock (that stops you from moving it out of Park without depressing the brake first) isn't working properly.

Show it to the service people, but b4 that, review in the owner's manual how to release the interlock manually if the electronic release malfunctions.

Thanks for the video.

My gear lever feels like it is not a smooth, but I always think that its me being slow on the brake pedal...

However I never... NEVER had the sticking problem with my Lexus.
