Navi/Voice Recogition woes = Possible Dealbreaker

I currently drive an 04 TL, which has been a great car.

I was very excited about the release of the new G. I considered the G two years ago when I got the TL, but the interior was not up to par in the old model and I passed.

This time, with the improvements, new engine, and AWD, I thought I had a winner.

If only it were that easy....

The fact that this car locks you out of most of the functions in the Navi, phone and MusicBox system when in motion is aggravating enough (my Acura does not do that), but if the voice recognition worked well I could deal. It does not. I just spent about an hour at my local dealer playing with the Navi and VR in 3 different Gs, and its success rate is horrible. About one out of 25 times you can get it to understand the city you want for a destination is "Albany." Otherwise, it comes up with a variety of creative choices.

Without the ability to program destinations and access other functions while underway, the system is basically useless to me. And, as a result, I'm sorry to say I may be passing on the G.

Has anyone else experienced this? It is VERY frustrating. The voice recognition on my TL, while not perfect (none of them are) is FAR superior to that of the G. We tried every combination, three people talking to it, moving and stopped. It simply does NOT work well at all.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Solutions?

Thanks.

The VR in my G has worked very well. The only time that it hasn't worked well was yesterday when I had three other people in the car. They kept talking when I would try and issue a voice command and of course it didn't work properly. Other than that, it has worked very well. There is a learning function that you can go through that will adapt the system to your voice..........maybe that would help you.

I personally agree that certain functions should be disabled while driving.........for obvious safety reasons.

Btw, welcome to the forum.

Probably the most insignificant reason I've ever heard to pass on a sport sedan (key word: sport).

I disagree...my Odyssey Nav allows POI and other commands while driving which is VERY useful...I'm disappointed as well that the G does not allow this.

That's what the voice commands are for.

Yeah, it really does work very well. I love being able to do pretty much everything without taking my eyes off the road and my hands off the wheel. The trick is keeping people from yapping when you are trying to give the system voice commands.

Btw Jasplat, if you haven't already done so, grab the Voice command cheat sheet that is stickied at the top of the page........it's VERY helpful.

the VR works 10 x better in the infiniti system than for example i trieed it in the acura RL which is horrible. you'll enjoy it. takes time to learn all the commands but you'll get the hint after a few times

Well, based on more than an hour trying to get the VR in the G to work yesterday, it is not half as good as what is in my TL. It just will not work properly with the city names, which makes it impossible to program in a route. It wasn't just me--a salesperson and sales manager were trying it too. In several different cars.

And as to the person who said it is an insignificant reason, this shortcoming effectively renders useless the Navi while driving. I don't view that as insignificant at all.

The training only affects the commands--which work fine. The problem is with the system's recognition of city names, which hardly works at all.

Not sure what to tell you. I know that mine works great recognizing city/street names and I haven't read any complaints about this from other members either.

Question - does the G allow you to turn the mic up, so the system is more sensitive? With my car it was failing about 1/4 of the time, I turned the mic up one notch and now it's close to 100%.

some people have issues where they scream towards the microphone where you don't have to in the G.

Good thinking Kevin. I checked the owners manual but didn't find any way to adjust the mic. I don't recall seeing this in any of the onboard options either. Something like this would probably help though.

It's a hit or miss for me. I think it has stage fright. I usually works great for me, but when I try to show off in front of someone, it makes mistakes. If I am very deliberate in my words, it picks it up. I think it does get nervous in front of more people though.
