After I filled up just an hour ago, I was twisting the gas cap back on without realizing that I hadn't let the cap loose rotate so the strap stays put. As I tightened it on, the strap snapped off. I managed to find only one of two suspected pieces to the fastener.

Honestly, I'd rather not even have the strap, because several times -- including today -- I'd rest the gas cap on the door, but because I didn't do it well, it ends up just falling off and hitting my car's paint. If it didn't have a strap, then it'd just fall onto the ground instead.

The strap is attached to #2 (see pic below), correct? I'll just bug my dealership to fix it when I get my first (free) service.

On a more positive note, I got a whopping 21.1 mpg on my 6MT! That's the first time I've reached over 20mpg. Since my last fill up, I've been driving mostly freeway with cruise control on at around 70-75mph. Add to that some occasional days of stop-and-go traffic, too.

Ouch. I feel your pain.

The exact thing happened to me 2 weeks ago. I should get this fixed in my first service in 3 weeks.

I am using piece of trash bag tie to attach it to the hole at this point.

My dealership -- and probably yours, too -- offers complimentary first service. This is not an Infiniti corporate thing. It's a courtesy offer from your dealership, but it seems to be very common. Maybe I'll just zippy tie that sucker for now. I love zippy ties. They do wonders when you do mods, especially in an audio install.

I'm actually thinking of removing my strap. Here in MA they removed all the trigger locks on gas pumps, so you need to stand there depressing the lever throughout the fill up. I've always just stuck the gas cap in the handle to keep the lever depressed and this is the first car I've had that doesn't reach. Your hands can get real cold standing there with a frozen gas pump handle in it.

LOL, i lived in upstate NY for a year and it was the same at a lot of pump stations. i used my wallet. it sucks when it's -10F outside and you have to hold the pump.

I hadn't heard that some states removed the trigger locks. What is the reasoning behind that?

My dealer didn't tell me anything about free maintenance...maybe when I pick up the car, they will be "nice" and give me such a thing.

I just might cut the strap off. Knowing myself, I will never misplace the cap anyway.

I'm not sure but think it's to prevent you from leaving the pump, getting in your car, and either A)getting side tracked and driving away or B)getting back out loaded with static electricity and igniting a fire.

I hadn't tried the wallet routine, but that wouldn't work for me since sometimes while it's filling I'll run in the store for a drink or something. I think I might just cut it.
