Unhappy gas pump issues

this may seem like a total noob question, but I've had this issue twice on the two occasions I have had to gas up my new G.

At any gas station these days they have the _auto stop_ feature right, you sort of hook the gas lever so it continues to push gas, while you can stroll around the look at your car... and then when the tank is full it automatically clicks off... know what I am talking about?

Well, first time, I had a pump that would make the click sound and stop when the tank was half full. at which point I had to manually keep pressing the gas lever - and it would click off even then after pumping in a little more gas - sort of like what the pump should do when the tank is already full.

I know its half full because I only put in say 8-9 gallons. and this same thing happened today again when it stopped at 8-9 gallons at the pump. and did the same auto click/stop even when i tried it manually.

anyone else notice this, how should I be pumping gas...?

its all 91 Octane FYI.

thanks

Ah.. it's because you are using 91 octane and not 93. Your car doen't like it and its letting you know...

Seriously.. I don't know why you are experienceing this.. Make sure the nozzle is straight and not pointing to the side. I have had no issues with fillups except that the fuel door is on the wrong side!

No problems here either...
'Course these darn California pumps are S-L-O-W and have all the fume collector crap on them too.
I'd say flip the lever but hold it down further and see if it still does it - and maybe try another station. It's possible that the lip on the nozzle that holds it into the filler tube is too high/low.

Try pulling the pump nozzle out about an inch after it's inserted.

My Matrix does this all the time, no idea why, but backing it off abit seems to help.

thanks, thats kind of what I suspect...

lovin the car tho... driving to work in bay area traffic, touching 90-100 ever so often... awesome.

the other day to punk kids with their tuned up civics challenged the G and I being a rather older guy was not sure at first if I should pick up the challenge or not, but then I just went for it... we raced for 3 miles up 101N - their cars were crying and the G majestically touched 120 without breaking a sweat and had more on tap before the punks just let off and were left in the proverbial dust.

thats also why i need to gas up weekly and this half tank thing means i need to gas up twice as often !!

I've noticed this in my old car when I parked at a pump station where the ground is not level. Did this happen both times at the same station? Same pump?

Could also mean the station is out of gas.

That's "SWELL" LOL.
Actually, the power band on these cars is pretty impressive... it seems limitless.

this use to happen on my a4 at certain gas stations. try what Cyanide Ride suggested. if that doesnt work, turn the pump upside down (insert it normally then turn it so the hose is pointed down. that always worked with me.

There is a fuel shutter valve TSB they use to do to 04-05 350z's and G's. I had it done to my 05X and it fixed the problem.

TSB# in the nissan system is - NTB05048

Aren't the pumps bolted down?

I agree. It is because your gas filling tube is starving for air, so the gas is draining slower, backing up the fill tube and shutting off the fill nozzle.

I've had this problem too a couple of times, it seems I've figured out how to do it properly though...as cyanide ride suggested, the 'backing off' approach appears to yield results.

EDIT:

thanks for the explanation...I'll take your word for it but it sounds plausible.
