Sound quality question for MusicBox

Hi all. I'm looking into replacing my 2006 Acura TL with a G35 sedan with the upgraded sound system. Still haven't decided so I'm in the research phase right now. Comparing it to a TL Type-S.

Anyhoot, my question for you folks with the Music Box setup is whether the 132 (edit: corrected, thanks!) kbps encoding rate comes through as sounding poor in the car. I rip all my CDs at 160 kbps generally because I can hear the difference at home. I don't know whether this would be true in the car environment however.

Your detailed opinions are appreciated! Thanks!

No noticeable degradation in my opinion.
Actually some nice nuances and presence.

You might want to take in a CD and a CF card and test the system for yourself. I think you'll like it.

You have two choices when ripping a CD to the Music Box.....105 kbps or 132 kbps. I have ripped all my CDs using 132 kbps and I find the sound quality excellent.

^^ Same here.
I only have 2 CDs;
The Best of The Partridge Family
and
Wayne Newton Sings Broadway
So I might not be the best at answering this question... LOL.

Anyhoot, my question for you folks with the Music Box setup is whether the 128 kbps encoding rate comes through as sounding poor in the car. I rip all my CDs at 160 kbps generally because I can hear the difference at home. I don't know whether this would be true in the car environment however.

Coming from a FWD Acura, you'll be so blown away by the G's handling and balance that you wouldn't worry too much about bitrates and such

Seriously though, I've played 128k files (via the CF card) and the quality is pretty good. Especially given the road noise and other ambient sounds when driving, you have a less than ideal listening environment - so I doubt if you can tell the difference. (unlike your home audio setup)

thanks fellas.

I've driven both cars already and like the way they both feel. I've owned true sports cars in the past so outright performance in a sedan isn't the most important thing in the world to me. that's what my moto is for

I think I will rip a CD to the HDD this weekend when I'm back at the dealership and do an A-B test. Thanks again for your feedback everyone!

Altersys,

I came from an 04 TL, and this 07 G35Sport is tough to beat for performance/feature/quality. I know the TL interior is pretty decent, but the G is not slouch. Now throw in the features and performance, and its no contest. Enjoy.

You should message g35sedan04. He is an acura salesman, and hes getting the new 07 G Sedan. He has a thread similar to yours about his new ride up right now, check it out...

Thanks again for the replies all. Like I said, there're pros and cons to both cars right now. This thread is specifically about the HDD bit rate, which it sounds like might not be an issue (but I'll confirm this weekend with one of my CDs). My decision between the cars will be based on many factors, performance being one of them... but not the only one

Again, thanks!

I apologize, I had the impression you switched over already. This is just one man's opinion, but ultimately its your choice. Both cars are great, but in my case coming from the 04TL, I'm extremely satisfied

Oh no big deal. Didn't even realize you thought that. I like both cars a lot. Will be testing them again back-to-back this weekend and probably deciding then

Good luck in your decision. Are you looking at Sport or X?

journey.

i drove the sport and don't like the seats at all. the suspension tuning is nice, but the compliance of the journey actually seems to make more tire contact with the ground on "real" roads.

the brakes feel just as good on the journey and since this is a street car i wont be driving them to the point of fade so then it's just for looks. and frankly driving the sport and the journey back-to-back the pedal feel felt stiffer (i prefer that) on the journey! Similarly the LSD isn't necessary unless you're flooring it out of every turn. i'm not going to drive like an a-hole on the street, and im definitely not tracking this luxury car

the only thing i really will miss are the paddle shifters. oh well.

"with the Music Box setup is whether the 128 kbps encoding rate comes through as sounding poor in the car. I rip all my CDs at 160 kbps generally because I can hear the difference at home"

I think I can hear a difference between the Music Box and an audio CD. I have gone back and forth and the CD sounds fuller, more complex or richer. Is it my imagination? I like the Music Box but would prefer less songs at better quality. I may end up transfering CD's to a CD flash, at a higher rate. I wish there was an option to record to the music box at a higher rate, and that this may be possible to upgrade via software in the future.

I think the sound system is good enough to tell a difference. I wonder at what rate it becomes indistiguishable from an audio CD? I read somewhere at 256 kbps but I don' really know.

as i now have the car, i can tell the difference with the car off in the garage. once it's moving i really cant. and i drive with the windows down a lot too so it's even less of an issue.

that said, i would also be happy with 160 which is what i rip at for my ipod and my home setup.
