Nav worth the extra dollars or not
Get the factory Nav!! Here in California you're not supposed to attach anything on your windshield that obscures your outward vision. With that being said, the only options left on where to mount your aftermarket Tom-Tom or Garmen Nav unit would then be limited to less than ideal locations to use on the fly.

(and, ahem, radar detectors ??)
Driving around and wanting to eat somewhere? Look it up on your nav! Then, if you have a Bluetooth enabled phone, your G can even dial it for you, all hands-free. Ah, American laziness at its best.
I installed a Garmin GVN52 Nav unit. Uses the existing screen and works with a remote. Best of both worlds. No silly lockouts and excellent mapping all displayed on the screen you already have and spoken through the car audio. I'm amazed others haven't gone this route for $400.
It's a pretty cool feature. Also, all of the extra stuff that comes with it is great, and even if you don't use it that often, when you do need it or take a wrong exit and end up in the middle of nowhere, it's then and there you realize wow, I'm glad I bought this!
Indispensible but I work in sales support so that biases my opinion I think.
The added features make it worth more than just a nav system, as already mentioned. XM Traffic isn't great here in Dallas but it's saved me from getting on the freeway enough times to make it well worth the $4/mo.
Being able to pan and zoom around helps you figure out where you are and where you're going on rarely traveled routes, which can be stored or backtracked as recorded. Pretty handy. Being able to find a place by intersection or highway exit or phone number (via stored locations) can be invaluable as well.
The route priority feature is pretty cool too, being able to select fastest time, least freeway, etc., by voice no less, makes getting somewhere in a hurry much easier and less distracting (safer) especially if you set up route guidance to be the least intrusive for your tastes. Splitview maps help, too.
But all this is really only helpful if you drive a lot, need to get places you've never been, and/or have only vague directions - and if you live in a place with enough detailed coverage. Get much outside a dense urban area and it's near worthless. This doesn't bother me but I can see how it could make the option less attractive to some.
Only had the car about a month and I'm already addicted to it.
