The only thing that is scary - these sales figures show that Infiniti is one-trick pony. The only cars they sell are 2 sedans and one coupe. Infiniti needs to expand their lineup. With M sales starting to dry up - the G line now makes up almost 80% of the sales.

Those coupe sales will definitely rebound after the G37 comes out.

M35

I've had a loaded G35x for the last three months. I got an M35 rental through Hertz on a business trip last week. It was a base model (with the neverlost Nav). I was thrilled to pick it up as a rental. After driving it for a few days, it pales in comparison to the G. It drives like a Maxima or an Avalon. Accel was poor, handling was designed for the "old man" crowd. I think the M is a sweet looking ride, but I was not impressed with how it drives. I imagine the '45 sport model with the V8 is a different story. I can't see throwing out an extra 8-10k for a loaded M35. Unless the extra width and rear leg room is a huge factor, it doesn't make any sense. The G is a far superior machine. I don't think an honest salesman (if they exist) could push an M35 over a G.

Like you said, the M is larger, and the interior is more luxurious (better materials and build quality) IMO.

The sure aren't selling many SUVs, but it doesn't actually look that bad. Looking at these numbers, I'd say:
  1. G sedan sales are going great, and are siphoning off some M sales
  2. Coupe sales have tanked because of all the publicity over the G37
  3. FX sales are trending up and look pretty positive
  4. Infiniti needs to work on the full-size SUV...EDIT>> Note that this is a volume comment, not a feature / quality comment

^^ I for one actually like the QX. No need for it, but would much rather have that than a Yukon or something like that.

They need a lineup similar to BMW and Audi. They have the G to cover the 3-series. And the M to cover the 5-series. But I'd like to see an even smaller car than the G to take on the A3, and 1-series. It would be nice to have a 3000-3,200 lbs smaller G with the new HR (3.5 or 3.7).

EDIT: I guess it will happen by 2009. Article here on Autoblog.

EDIT2: Obviously not quality control according to article but Consumer Reports ratings have shown the QX56 to have been a drag on the entire Infiniti line for reliability.
Your post is accurate Infiniti as a brand is extremely reliable. If it were not for the QX, the brand would top the charts behind Lexus. Nissan would also be higher on the charts if not for the Titan and Armada.

When the new EX35 and Q replacement are released, Infiniti will be a brand the industry should fear.

I completely agree. It's nice to see the new gen G has been received so well. The new G37 will be received just as well if not better. I'm surprised to see that the FX is actually trending upward even in its 4th, soon to be 5th, year of existence with the same body style. Good stuff all around. The only disappointment, imo, is the drop in M sales. Just not enough difference between the M35 and the new G35. Size can't be the only thing that, in the consumers mind, separates the two.

I would disagree. Unlike BMW or Audi, Infiniti has Nissan to cover for the lower models. There is not need to compete with anything lower than the G.

While there may not be a need, I agree with him that I would love to see a smaller version of the G35 possibly with even a hatchback version similar in styling to the FX priced just under 30k fully loaded. Nissan may cover the lower models but the Altima and Maxima are the same size as the G35 if not a little longer. This is one of the things holding me back from buying a G. After having a 2000 Maxima SE and a 2004 Jetta GLI, I realized how much I prefer a smaller car.
