oil change: 3000 or 3 months

what up guys ...

just wanted to get your opinion on oil changes ...

pretty striaght forward: 3000 or 3 months ...

basically, i've had my car for about 3 months now but i'm only at 21xx miles ... should i get an oil change? or should i wait until 3000/3750 ...

i don't drive the car hard ... basically, any long trips are atleast 70 miles ... local driving mostly .... hence the low miles ...

holla back!

I think.... you can wait until 3000 miles or so.

I'd get it changed though, it just makes me feel bad if something says it should be done and I don't.

I'd go 3,000 - have always used that period and that's in constant stop-and-go traffic using dino oil (GOOD dino oil, Castrol GTX 5w30). My last two Nissans have gone 120k miles and 65k miles before being sold, and have not burned oil or had excessive engine wear.

if its the first oil change, I would go ahead and do it now since you are past breakin, and there is going to be more contamination from the breakin that you want to get out of the system ASAP.

The "three month" timetable may be designed for people who don't pay much attention to the odometer.

But if they don't pay much attention to the odometer, maybe they don't look at the calendar either...

But seriously...

Average yearly driving miles are around 15,000 and 3750 is one quarter of that.

Hence...3 months.

I have 2200 on mine and I took delivery March 31st.

I'll be waiting until the 3k mile mark to get it changed...

change it every 3k. people's driving varies so you can't use the 3 month rule. use the personal odometer's to track miles between oil changes.

On what technical basis are you basing your 3k change on?

I've had a few cars that I didn't drive very much, so I'd typically just used good synthetic oils and good filters and changed it every 6 months or so (usually equaled about 2500 miles).

Also, you bought your car and they put oil on it shortly after it was built. In my case, my car was manufactured in March, 2007, so it's already had it's oil in it for a while now (even though it didn't get driven regularly until the end of June).

I plan on doing my first oil change (Castrol GTX) at 2k miles just because I want fresh oil in there before I start really driving it hard (still breaking it in). I'll let that one stay in there for 2-3k miles. A lot of it also has to do with if I have any free time or any trips planned, etc. I lean on the cautious side and just change it more often than I should (usually between 2k and 2500 miles), but it's peace of mind for me.

I do it every 3,750 miles. It equates to 4 months for me. I make sure I don't exceed 6 months which will void warranty.

There are 2 schedules 3mons/3,750 or 6mons/7,500. Provided that I keep it under 6 months or 3,750 miles, I have my way to talk it out of warranty issues.

Where does it make that comment about the warranty voiding after 6 months?

I do almost purely stop and go local driving. Hence I don't have that may miles racked up, but what I do have are "hard driven" miles, which from what I hear can deteriorate the oil more then fwy miles. I changed it at the 3 month mark with about 2k miles on, and plan to do my next change at around 4 months after that (will have about 4500k on the odo)

I do 10k oil changes with a filter change at the 5k mark with Amsoil oil and Mobil 1 filter. The VQ is good up to 17k with Amsoil or Mobil 1 EP. Each engine is different and oil analysis is the only way to know for sure. Any car can go 10k with either of these oils with no problem with exception of turbocharged vehicles.

My dealer is enforcing the 6 month/7,500 mi rule, exactly what the salesman told me upon delivery.

Bought car in Jan, called April with under 1,000 mi asking for oil change was told call back in 3 mo. Had first oil change this past weekend with just over 2,000 mi & the sticker they put on my windshield says next change on 1/7/08 @ 9,758 mi.

Btw, the G is not my full-time vehicle & Terry's key fob cover rocks. Even the dealership service manager did a double take when I handed him my 'protected' fob.
