Ticking at WOT?

Ticking at WOT?

Anyone else getting a ticking sound at WOT? When I floor the car and hit 6500+ rpms, I'm getting a fast ticking sound.

What's wierd is that at the same rpms in 2nd gear vs. 1st, the ticking is slower.

I'm running 93 octane, so it shouldn't be knock retard. Plus, it's an even speed tick and KR is erratic.

If it's the engine, the ticking speed should be consistent with the rpms, and gear choice wouldn't matter. It definitely sounds like it's coming from under the hood. Thoughts?

When was your car built? There was a TSB to remove silicon ***** from the heater core that caused a ticking sound. There's a link in the FAQ.

Well, I brought it into the dealership. Of course they didn't "hear anything wrong."

So, I got the service manager to go on a ride with me. And of course the sound was there. It happens about 1/2 the time above 6k rpms, a constant clicking from the driver's side under the hood.

He said he's never heard anything like that before and it's unlikely being caused by the heater core because the core is on the passenger side (according to him).

I've got to bring the car back in for some other work in a week, and they're looking into the ticking then. Any other thoughts?

The closest I can describe the sound is exactly like having a playing card in the spokes of your bicycle. It's about that loud and that same sound.

Keep us posted, I have this EXACT issue. and the ticking is coming from under/behind the instrument panel. it does it at all times and I notice it does it even at lesser throttle, seems to be from 1/2 way to full. I also believe that the ticking speeds up as the car goes faster, or it speeds up as RPM's get higher.

It sounds to me like an SLR camera shutter.

What's interesting is that the ticking at the same rpms is slower in 2nd gear than in 1st gear for me. I dunno. But, it's definitely NOT a normal sound. I could tell that from the look on the service manager's face when he heard it.

From past experience, I know it's NOT the usual "suspects" that make a ticking sound (exhaust leak, knock retard, head or exhaust gasket, etc.)

Oh yeah, and throttle position doesn't matter, just rpms (for me). If I keep the car in first gear at part throttle at 6k, I can still get the sound.

I have an appointment scheduled for Monday to have them check this out. I'll post some info when I hear what the deal is.

Well.... they flushed the heater core for silicone (in the FAQ).

Problem solved.
