very weird transmission issue (long story)

before i begin, let me say that i'm not an expert when it comes to all the technical details about shifting gears and how tranny's work.. I drive an automatic and the reason for that is because i don't know how to drive a manual tranny although i would love to - so forgive me if i don't describe my tranny problems like a technician, but i'll try my best - anyways, heres the scenario:

i'm driving over a bridge between staten island, ny and new jersey.. it's a real narrow bridge (for those of you in the area, i'm talking about the goethal's bridge) and i'm in the left lane and there is an 18-wheeler in the right lane but of course he's mostly in my lane and there are cars up my rear because the flow of traffic in the left lane is obviously faster than that of the right lane.. so we're coming up the incline of the bridge (semi-steep incline) and as he moves over to the right a bit, i make my move. I hit the gas and rather than my 306 ponies doing what they do best, they hesitated and then finally took off - we've all had this happen before with automatic trannys i'm sure, especially in an uphill scenario.. so i thought nothing of it and i soared down the rest of the bridge and took an off ramp onto another stretch of highway that is at a higher speed. so i hit the gas and accelerate to their speed. the problem is my car literally jerks backwards.. i mean the car downshifted with so much force that i felt like my rear wheels just ran over my front wheels.. i look down and my rpm's are at a steady 6k and my speed is at 40-45... it sounded and felt normal because this usually happens when i'm "having some fun" in DS mode, however the part that concerned me most was my VDC|OFF light and SLIP light were on.... not blinking, not flashing, just steadily lit...

now i never turned off the VDC, but it was on.. and not only were my wheels not slipping, but i've never ever seen the SLIP light remain on... so knew something was wrong.. the first thing i did was turn to my g/f and say "my trannys just broke". as i continued to drive, my car was still up shifting and down shifting gears, but at a very, very high rpm and when it finally shifted, it was a very, very 'hard' shift that resulted in what sounded like something was broken and a very sudden jerk/hiccup from the entire car...

it all happened at about 6:30 est time so i call up my dealer and asked for the service dept and when i got through they said all technicians were gone and so i asked if i could come in the following morning and she said they were all booked but if i'd like to bring it by and just see if they can squeeze me in then i was more than welcome to... i felt like this was my only option but i had to get home and since the car was shifting (not properly, but it was drivable) i kept driving... so i park the car and try and find my transmission dipstick (no luck, i finally searched this forum and discovered that it's supposably hidden.... good one infiniti) but after getting fed up and quite frankly pissed off, i let it sit there with the engine off... about an hour later, i get in and start the car and the car starts normally, no VDC light, no SLIP light, nothing... I put it in D and the car drives like it did when i first took delivery............ i'm stumped... so whats your thoughts???

Hi Weggie,
I had that exact same problem happening to me about 2 months ago... the dealer couldn't figure out what was the problem for over 2 weeks...

A week later I got a call saying that they found the problem... apparently some ECU sensor had to be replaced... it works fine today.

Yikes. Good luck because as always, they're going to have to duplicate the problem. Intermittant problems are always the hardest (and most annoying) to get fixed.

well i'm relieved to know someone else had the same issue, but still annoyed that this happened in the first place to me or anyone else - anyways, it hasn't acted up since it sorta "reset" itself during that hour i left it parked, so i'm not concerned about it right now... but if it happens again i will be heading to the dealership, thanks

I am Having the same thing

HTML Code:
however the part that concerned me most was my VDC|OFF light and SLIP light were on.... not blinking, not flashing, just steadily lit...

now i never turned off the VDC, but it was on.. and not only were my wheels not slipping, but i've never ever seen the SLIP light remain on... so knew something was wrong..
This just started happening to me also. About two months ago While coming back from Ithaca, the VDC Off and Slip Light came on while driving on the highway. It feels very bad like the transmission doesn't know which gears to choose and it causes the car to lurch forward when it decides to go in a gear. I took it to the dealership and simulated the whole thing. They scratched their heads on this event. They kept the car for two weeks and gave me a loaner. I thought they fixed the issue but it just started happening again. You can pull over and shut off the car and it will reset itself but isn't that inconvient It is so frustrating that they don't know what to do. I suggest they check the transmission drain plug for metal particulate and also replace the torque converter along with the transmission. I think that will fix the slipping issue. I have to drop off the car this Friday for the second time. I will also share with them that I am not by myself on this Slip and VDC Off issue.

Humm, all you guys have auto trannys, right? I've had this happen on my 6MT once when driving HARD (120+ MPH). The car shuddered a bit but drove normally. It was weird seeing those lights on and not blinking.

Of course they reset after shutting the engine down. Haven't popped up again in normal driving.

yea i agree, it's a total inconvenience and it pretty much ruined my night - i knew that if i brought it to the dealership they would scratch their heads so i was praying it would just reset itself so i didn't have to waste my time getting to the dealership, explaining it to them and then having a stupid loaner for the next couple of weeks.. but if it happens again i'll have no choice but to bring it to them and make some noise, because a $500+/month car shouldn't do this!

I absolutely agree. Nissan North America called me today for the service I just recieved and I shared my story with them. I also stated that I wasn't the only experiencing this happening. I recommend that for all of us who are experiencing this, to at least contact NNA and explain what you are going through. Besides, they are supposed to contact you if you had your car serviced at an Infiniti Dealership.

Wow...this definitely just happened to me. I got my car stuck in the snow and spun the tires, burned some rubber.

I've got a 6MT and the VDC and Slip lights stay on even after restarting the car.

I guess I should call the dealer huh?

ok guys I had this like in January. The problem was

"97 consult test found DTC PO345 CMP sensor intermittent cam sensor ordered for replacement". That is exactly what the workorder says. They ordered one and replaced it and never seen the alarm again.

this probably happened because i'm sure it's cold as hell up north and transmissions do not work well in cold conditions. let everything warm up properly before you floor it
