Is the "de-tuned" engine just a prelude to what will be released the following year with the intended power?

Any mention of its weight?

Tag Heuer is right, though. it seems stupid to release a slower version of the car just to enable throwing the nameplate of g37 on it. detune? come on now, that's just stupid.

A quick reflash with the appropriate ECU software should fix the HP problem. Maybe the North American model will have different software that allows for the full potential of the 3.7 motor in HP instead of efficiency (I'm assuming the Euro model has better mileage). We can only hope.

Anyway, maybe we can get this thread back on topic. The "new" G looks great and it's the 7 speed auto transmission that interests me (unless they will offer the 6 speed manual with AWD.

that's a lot of assumption. I'm thinking it might be a simple ecu detune as well, but it won't necessarily be so. while it wouldn't make a bit of sense to retool to create hardware reasons why the g37 sedan would make less power, i don't put it past nissan to do so. they've been pretty ambitious at making odd/bad decisions in the past.

the 7spd auto is nifty. the price tag it should be commanding isn't. oh well.

You think the price will go up due to the 7 sp trans? I hope that it doesn't move too far upscale. I don't think they would move upmarket pricewise until they completely overhaul the design.

As far as detuning, I'm sure everyone is hoping that it doesn't get released in North America with the detuned motor; it really makes no sense. Once the road tests of the European version come out we'll at least have an idea of performance and efficiency.

I am personally surprised that they didn't go with a smaller motor for Europe. I've seen Mercedes S class sedans with 2.0 supercharged motors in Greece (due to higher taxes on larger displacement). Obviously they're not too concerned with sales volume for the time being.

r u sure its S not E.....just wondering.. in Singapore where taxes r crazy and cars r probably the most expensive in the world, they do not even have 2.0 S classes.. I think the S classes started... at 2.8 back when they looked like tanks just before the revision...

simple econ here.

cost of production on the 7spd is going to be higher than the outgoing 5spd because
-the 5spd is less complex
-the 5spd's cost of development has been covered by now because it's been around for a bit

there are plenty of other reasons, but those come to mind immediately.

also figure many of us bought our cars for near invoice, at invoice, and a few below invoice. look at ex35 pricing. there aren't a lot of people dealing on them, right? same deal with the coming g37 most likely. new model plates typically mean you'll be paying msrp and trying to get them to throw stuff in.

regardless, I can see invoice going up a fair amount from these various "upgrades"

You might be right. I may be thinking of the E200.

...just checked the Greek website and could only go as low as S280 but I did find the E200. Even the E series is a large car over there (compared to everything else).

maybe nissan/infiniti has just reached a limit with this engine? and nothing can be done to it to improve? we've gone up from 260hp back in the day, remember? and now what? additional horses seem to have stopped coming... and the acceleration times have stagnated... what other car manufacturer has produced a next gen car (G37) that prev. gen car (G35) can easily keep up with?

a couple flaws with that.

-they're detuning the g37 sedan
-it keeps getting a lot heavier each time you so much as look at it
-there's always room to make more power from the same or similar package. the beauty and bane of internal combustion motors is the horrible lack of efficiency.

nissan hasn't hit the wall by any means. they're just pulling a toyota and doling out the good bits in bits and pieces...kinda like a pimp keeping his hoes in line.

I think we may be missing one very SIGNIFICANT point as to why infiniti is making everything a 37

it doubt its for power, fuel efficiency, etc. etc.

its just cheaper to use one engine across the board as oppossed to two

I'm a bit new to this, but can someone explain how does the 7-speed automatic transmission differs from the 5-speed automatic transmission. What are the 2 additional gears?
