Rust Spot- Drivers Door

ok, so about a month ago i got shot with a bibigun on my drivers door. police came, searched for the kids, etc. finally, they cant do anything (in reality, they dont give 3 ****s). so that takes us to today. at first, it was a tiny hole, it penetrated the paint and dented the metal. it has started to create surface rust and the bare metal part is about the size of half a dime.

my question to you guys is...what can i do that does not include repainting the entire door. i want to remove the rust and put either touch up paint, or clear nail polish so the paint doesnt chip anymore but i have to get rid of the rust first.

sooo.....does anybody know how i can get rid of the surface rust without hurting the surrounding perfectly fine areas????

ill try to get pics asap

First off you should get a paintless dent repair, where someone will come out to you and massage the metal out from the inside to make it flat again. Then you need to remove any rust that's in the chip. Most touchup paints have one of those small little metal brushes built into the cap; you can use that to remove the rust. Check for loose paint around the edges and take it off gently or it may bubble up later.

I would use primer, paint, and clear coat touch up products in that order, but possibly two or more coats (VERY THIN) of paint in order to bring the paint level up to the edges of the original paint. There's a lot of info out there so do some searching and fix it before it spreads.

thanks for the info. the links have alot of info.

if for now, i didnt want to repaint it, but just get rid of the rust and put some sort of clear (like ive heard before, clear nail polish does the trick) can i remove the rust and put the clear??? also, the dent is not deep enough for dent repair. its more like a mere indention in the metal.

In my opinion, unfortunately the only proper way is to sand down the hole area to the bare metal past the outer diameter of the rust. Otherwise you will be leaving rust/oxygen under the paint repair. Even if the area is only the size of a dime that you have to sanded down thats a pretty big area to touch up. The other way I would say is some naval jelly rust remover and then some touch up paint and just hope for the best. But in a couple of years if it starts to rust through it will be a lot harder to match the paint.

Just my thoughts I'm sure there will be more and better ideas.

Getting Shot issues....?

If it isn't taken care of correctly you'll eventually have a major problem with
that door. Using the dent removal will bring the tiny dent flush so it can be
treated and the rust removed. Nail polish won't stop the rust from working on
your door!

You should still take off any loose paint. If you've got a Dremel or something like it, use it to remove the rust (gently) andfeather out the edges a little. There shouldn't be a problem with sealing it temporarily to minimize rust, but try to use something like a rust primer touchup or similar compound before sealing it. Ultimately, you should fix it properly.

ultimately, id like to fix the problem, but right now money isnt growing on trees, and im going to college in a few months so gotta fill the piggy bank, lol. so, i just finished sanding it as best i could. im gona go to autozone and ask for a rust remover that doesnt damage paint, get the rest off hopefully, and what clear do u guys recommend in the meantime that will protect the bare metal from the elements?

Drop by the dealership and pick up a paint pen; it includes touchup paint and clearcoat in an easy to use package (one end is paint, the other clear). It shouldn't be more than about $17.
