if i'm going to have to drive an auto, i do prefer something that lets me drop from top gear to the next down (5th to 4th in your cases) without dropping my foot too far. more often than not, all I need is a little extra oomph another gear down. is350's 6spd was actually a tad more satisfying in that respect, but nothing takes the place of a manual, i suppose.

You can do that in regular AUTO mode, simply by hitting the left paddle. The car will drop down a gear, even without you tapping the gas. It's perfect for when you need to pass someone on the highway "right now".
