Need advice: Rims / Calipers / Exhaust / etc...

Hey guys new to the forum, I have a relatively stock 08 G35 Journey Black w/ 7 spoke wheels.

I've been thinking of murdering it out a bit. However, I plan on keeping the stock rims and powder-coating them. I don't think black on black looks that well with my car, so I was thinking about gunmetal powder coat, any thoughts / pictures?

Also, the chrome strip that lines the windows - could I ask the people who powder coat my rims to color that as well? Or is that not possible?

I also plan on blacking out the tail lights, and I will be buying a whole new set so that when I sell the car I have the normal ones just in case - does anyone know off the top of their heads how much the taillight covers cost?

Was debating painting the break calipers, heard you could buy a kit at autopart stores for $10-20? Has anyone painted the stock calipers? And what colors would you guys suggest for my look? I was thinking black red or blue...

Lastly, as unfortunate as driving a V6 is... Are there any legit exhausts around that have a lower rumble sound? (As close to a V8 as possible...) Or would I have to get into headers/cam for that sound?

Thanks for all the help guys,

Outphaze

Umm okay here goes lol,

first welcome!,

okay we dont' think you can powder coat that chrome trim because of the plastic that is attached to them, so during the process they will melt off and it would just destroy it.

I don't think you can just get tailight covers, you'll need to buy a whole new tailight, so why not get tints for the tails and just remove the tints once you're done with it.

There are some people on the forum with painted calipers, search there actually is a thread on it.

finally I heard the Borla exhaust makes the G35 sound like a V8.

Hope i helped.

Thanks a bunch for the response 8)

And as far as the tints for tail lights: I heard they are EXTREMELY difficult to remove, and the break lights on the new G35's have an extremely sharp bend/corner on them, buddies of mine said it would be rather difficult to do a good job and make them look good if I used the tint rather than coat.

I see you have a base journey...so i assume you have the 17" wheels.....dont waste powder coating those. Just save for some 19"+ aftermarket wheels.

Tails lights are seriously extremely easy to remove. 3 bolts and you're done. Exhaust.....its a V6....it will never sound like a v8. Maybe at idle, but once you get on the gas that low rumble will be gone. Go with Stillen and HFC if you want loud....minus the HFC if you want less loud. Fast intentions exhaust if you want a very tolerable great sounding exhaust and HFC with FI if you want a sick sounding exhaust that wont get annoying driving on a daily basis.

The chrome strip around the window is extremely easy to damage when removing. Its very thin and held in by sturdy clips. So its easy to mes something up. Stock calipers.....dont bother painting them.

UNless you're rocking a huge BBK, then painted stock calipers other than black or silver just look kinda ricey on an infiniti.

Yeah after researching a bit I definitely am against painting my calipers... If anything I'd do black but I think i'm just going to leave them.

As far as Rims... I don't like aftermarket, I want my car to look stock, but unique at the same time. I like the 17" stock rims, and I was thinking a gunmetal coat would add a bit of flavor to the car with the blacked out taillights / debadging.

And as for exhaust, i'll start looking for some sound clips of the ones you mentioned... But does anyone know how a G with straight pipes (or cut off after the resonator/cats) sounds? Is it too ricey?

I've always been a V8 truck guy, but tried a V6 due to the gas prices, the last thing I want EVER is to sound like a ricer, I hate them with a passion...

From what i heard and what i read, stock exhaust with no resonators = so much rasp it sounds like a rice box civic. I haven't heard one in person though. but like i said, i read that the Borla, although expensive is something you should look at, some people complained that didn't like it cause it sounded too much like a v8. I guess it would never give the same kinda or rumble but apparently it sounds like one, you should check it out. Where are you located? It would be best if you can find some one in your area with it to actually hear it in person, exhausts sound so different in clips.

If anyone has any used Borla exhaust in Texas I'll be interested in buying it this coming summer

No to powdercoating anything you currently have.

Tint your tailights if you want them darker, personally though im not a fan.

The VQ35HR sounds unique and great for a V6, but will never sound as good as a V8.

FI will probably be the best performing cat-back exhaust.

Good luck on w/e route you go with.

You guys don't like the idea of powder coating the stock 17" rims?

Not at all. Save your money and upgrade the wheels before considering powdercoating.

Hmm I really like the stock wheels, and have no intentions on wasting $1k + on wheels when I am already content.

Powder coating only costs $200-300 If I am not mistaken?

I don't see why everyone is against it... But appreciate the opinions 8)

If you like the stock wheels leave them as they are and find a better use of your money. It's going to look tacky (ricey, perhaps?) with those wheels powdercoated. Honestly, I don't even like any of the G35 or G37 19s powdercoated either - it's not a matter of them being a certain style. I feel that if they're stock, they should be left that way or it looks like you half-assed your modifications
