My car rattles when braking at high speeds.

When I'm on a free way or going at high speeds my car will rattle significantly when i'm slowing down. Your thoughts?

I just had my brakes checked for being warped 2 weeks ago so that's the latest service I've had on my car.

maybe they didnt put the rotors back on correctly. how bad is the rattle? do you feel it on the steering wheel or is it the entire car or both?

Does the steering wheel rattle? What is it exactly that rattles?

If your car rattles when you brake then it's probably your rotors and or brake pads. Uneven rotors and or brake pads will do that. Rotors that are machined too thin will cause this too. My friend had his rotors machined then had the shop install new brake pads. Two weeks later, his truck started to shake and rattle when he was braking. It turned out that the shop machined his rotors past the minimum thickness and his rotors warped.

Does your gas pedal vibrate or pulsate when you brake? Does your steering wheel shake as well? These symptoms get worst as your brakes get worst.

This is a long shot, but could it be a wheel that's incorrectly balanced or perhaps incorrectly torqued?

Yes it's also felt on the steering wheel. At first I thought I was just going through a crappy road but the rattle was pretty much the same on any surface.

Another possibility beside those previously mentioned include loose suspension components. In any case, your car is most likely still under warranty. If the issue can be easily reproduced, the dealership will take care of it for you.

When you take the car in, be sure to post up your findings here to close the loop for future reference.

Good luck.

I had the exact problem, after a spirited sprint upon hitting the brakes, every subsequent braking after that would produce the rattle. 2-5 minutes after that, the rattle would be gone. Took the car for the 30k service recently, had budgeted brakes & the killer 30k mile service charge, got a loaner with over 20k miles which oddly enough had the exact problem, even worse than my car

Long story short, I only paid for the 30k mile service, everything else, rotors and pads replaced under warranty. Now problem is gone and car is smooth sailing.

Have them replace your pads and rotors under warranty cos I think this could be a problem with one too many cars.

Good luck

Hey,

I'm experiencing the same problem and I suspect it may be the rotors being machined too thin. You say that the dealer replaced these under warranty? The dealer I went to said that I would have to pay for the replacement as it is a wear & tear item... thoughts?

I think I was very lucky as both the rotors and brakes pads were replaced under warranty. I would say go to another dealer and tell him how you are disppointed with the work done etc etc. I think it just depends on your luck on the say

Unfortunately, I may have the same problem (ratting/pulsing brake pedal + steering wheel) when braking. I replaced my rear brake pads at 30K (5K ago) with same OEM at a local shop (not wanting to be gouged by a dealer), and they did not cut my rotors at the time. Now, the latter are warped. Our stock rotors are merde anyway - but I wonder whether I should go to the dealership to address this... I think someone (AesonVirus) had his rotors replaced under warranty, but it seems that the problem is much more widespread.
