245mm compared to 225mm means the 245 is 20mm wider than the OEM. So 10mm per side, or less than 1/2"per side wider than OEM. Use a ruler to show you the difference compare to what you have now. Keep in mind there is variation from manufacturer and model as to what the width really is, in other words one type 225 tire will be wider/narrower than another 225. I dont think 1/2" per side on a 9.5" tire will stick out much or look bad, but up to you. I'm prolly gonna go with a 245/45 tire from my 225/50 OE's since the tires I'm looking at might not have rim protectors, and I dont really care how the tire looks that much, more about function. I'd rather protect the rims a bit and have a little more grip when driving and I'll live with a little bulge barely noticeable when stopped.

1. Glad you mentioned that. On my Elantra, which is slammed and on 205/45/17, I used to run the Yokohama AVS ES100's and they would rub with people in the back. When they wore out, I switched to Falken Ziex 512's (same size) and the rubbing went away. I found that the difference between the tires is that the Yokohamas had that built-in rim edge protector feature and the Falkens didn't. That caused the Yokos to be slightly wider. The Falkens cleared perfectly, but don't look as aggressive.
2. The reason I think they may look ugly is because I thought the 225/55/17 are only 7.5" wide?! I have the S with 18x8.5 225/50/18 on the fronts and the sidewalls stick out noticeably more than the rears. So I know if I went 245/45, it'll look really ugly up there!

If you are AWD, you want to run the same size front and back. You might get away fine since it's such a small difference in overall diameter. But would you wanna risk it is what you have to ask yourself. If you are RWD, then that size combo is great!
