Jeff, methinks you'll be happier with the 5AT. I like the 3.7, but the 7at seems mis-matched to the engine with all the gear hunting (based on extended experience on dealer loaner vehicles).

Gear hunting is definitely a fail on the 3.7 loaners I've had quite a few times. I say go for an 08 to avoid the headache of the crappy door handles and steering wheel.

08 ipod integration is a must! but the damn artist search is a pain when you have a lot of music. g37 can do fast scrolling

I had a loaner G37 last week and agree with the gear hunting. It was rather annoying. For performance and response, I like the 5AT better.

I do have to admit, though, fuel economy was a noticeable difference. My regular commute (no highway) I normally averages 18.3 mpg. Same commute/driving style in the G37 yielded 21.6. On the highway it was cruising about 700-800 less rpms for the same speed.

That's pretty much what I saw going from my 07 G35 to my 09 G37, I get up to 27 hwy (w/ 20" wheels), and my 07 w/ 18s got a best of about 25. I like the better fuel economy but the 5AT was so decisive and seemed to always be in just the right place on the power curve, especially in the 60-75 mph range when you really need it to be just right when making those twisty 2 lane passes. Paint still sucks for both models though
Hopefully some of the newer trans software TSBs will make the 7spd more decisive, sure hope so!

The improved mpgs (especially highway) and slightly better acceleration on the loaner G37 is what really gave me a bit of buyers remorse after getting my G35. Plus, the loaner 37 had no sunroof and I had tons of headroom! I didn't even know G's came without a sunroof!? (I'm 6'7" so it is an issue for my crazy height!)
That loaner was crazy fast---I'm guessing because the ECU has learned to accept daily beatings as a loaner, and without any options like a sunroof, premium package, etc...weighing it down, I'm betting it would've pulled an impressive run at the local track!

Have you driven one?
I personally hate the 7AT.

I buy another one, it'll be a 6MT, or a different car.

They should have just put a nice overdrive cog on the 5AT, Keeping all the
5ATs good points but having the heavier overdrive for good mpgs. The 7AT
is kinda like Payton Manning, it's great for the most part but shouldn't overthink the job at hand

Are the 0-60 / 1/4 numbers different inbetween the 7sp autos and 5 sp autos? Or is it too difficult to compare as the 7sp got the bigger motors?

0-60 the G37 is just a bit quicker since it's got 22 more hp, something like a 10th of a second, not sure about the 1/4 mile difference, shouldn't be much at all.
