Engine Almost Stalls On Cold Start From Park To Drive

I've noticed lately that if I put the car in DRIVE from the PARK position within 15-20 seconds of the car starting, the RPMs drop way down to below 1,000, reaching close to 500RPM and for a split second or two, it feels like the car is going to stall but it immediately comes back up above 1,000RPM.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks

Mine does the same. Took it to the dealer and they told me it was my exhaust and they charge me 120 and told me they reprogram it and it is better but still a little off.

Mine does the exact same but only on cold winter days. Sometimes it will actually stall! it's probably because the car isn't warm enough and the oil is too cold and thick.

how cold does it get in your area? 5w30 is good down to -30F outside temp... so i really doubt that it gets that thick, has to be some other issue imo. Unless it turns out be something serious like some sensors or such i can only recommend you guys to try and clean your TB its free and worth it anyways, it solved my rpm drop problems BUT my car never stalled before that either but would drop to the point where it seemed like it would a simple clean and iv not had that problem so far...

This happens to me too. It really happens specifically when you go from Park to Drive. The car lurches and the engine speed drops, then it picks back up again. In fact:

1- park to drive
2- release foot from brake
3- car lurches, engine speed drops, car not moving at all
4- engine speed comes back up, car starts moving

I have NO other idle issues.

Is that the way you experience it PJ?

+1 on cleaning the throttle bodies. there is an excellent DIY here to do it. my car did the idle dip thing in park and once i cleaned the throttle bodies i never had a problem since. whether this is related to the problems while you're in drive i'm not sure but it could very well be.

Ok Remmy, I'll give it a shot. Yesterday I started the car and without putting it in Park the almost stalled out. Sounded exactly like what you guys described so I guess that would be the most likely cause.

I won't have time to do it until I get back from vacation. I'll report back then.

Thanks!

BTW, my car is still under warranty. Is cleaning TBs considered to be customer serviceable work? Should I maybe have the dealer do it?

i highly doubt they would clean the TBs for free for you but you might as well ask (the worst they can say is no!). i just see their opinion being "let us troubleshoot it for $200 and then we'll clean them for free" ha ha, and honestly it takes maybe 20-30 minutes so it's really not so bad to do yourself, just be sure to follow the DIY.

This symptom sounds about the same to what I've had happen I think once on my 2008 G35x and a few times (during 6 years of ownership) to my 2003 G35. I think it stalled just once with the 2003, otherwise the other occurrences just sounded like it was going to stall but didn't. The one time it did stall with the 2003 I recall it took a couple of cranks to get it going again. But the problem never happened on back-to-back days, just random and I think it was always when it was cold outside but I'm not positive. Never had any problems beyond that. I drove the 2003 G to 102,000 miles and I have 46,000 on the 2008 G.

My experience is as follows:

1. Start Car
2. Move shifter from PARK to DRIVE
3. Experience an immediate drop in RPM from the 2,000+RPM's down to 500RPM and the car almost stalls or sounds like its about to stall.
4. Immediately following this drop, it comes back up again.

It seems to be the initial response in going from Park to Drive. It's only for a split few seconds but the drop is so signifcant in RPM's, it almost stalls the engine.

Yup. That matches my experience exactly. I'll be trying the TB cleaning in mid-April when I'm back.
