Well i am picking up my car tomorrow...i will have a brand new engine with not even 20 miles on it...is there anything i have to do special or just drive normal? I hear some people say not above 3000 rpms and some say it makes no difference at all
One site says babying it can actually hurt..another says rings need to set ect

I know this is a huge debate. But i drive moderately spirited for about 7-800 miles (no redlining but decently hardOriginally Posted by Anton_Chigurh

accels ok) and then drive it like i stole it for the rest of its life. I've done that on 2 other infiniti cars and other newer cars and all made it past 100k miles without any issues.
Yea its a huge debate, I think the thing everyone agrees on is not to keep at the same constant RPM for too long.
For 1k miles then you can start to open it up

Work is about 8 miles on the highway and rpms will change after that...whats the reason to not keep it at same RPMs for too long?Originally Posted by thescreensavers

Just don't use cruise control for the first 1000 miles and you'll be fine, those rpms should fluxuate enough that way. I'd also keep it under 6k rpm too.

I hear that this whole thing is a myth. I got my car brand new and had to drive on the freeway back home. I think i was doing 80. Even in the city i drove it kind of hard.

Anton, how many miles did the old engine have? Must be a great feeling to see that odometer reset to 20 miles!

I have mixed feelings about the break in period. I believe you should drive it aggressively, just don't redline it... You know, I have met a few people who have driven the VQ's pretty hard from the get go and the have no oil consumption issues, while there are others who do a proper break in and do have oil consumption. I know this topic had been talked about numerous times, so let's not beat a dead horse yeah?

I took my car to the dyno straight from the dealers lot. Did 3 pulls to break in the engine my best run was 282 hp and 235 ft lb torque.

i would do whatever the dealer tells you but i agree with the above, no cruise control for a while. just let the rpm's wander. you want the engine to break in under all ranges of operating speed.

When I had my 04 G35 it did call for a 1200 mile break-in period and not going over a certain RPM. This was in the owners manual. So if your current manual doesn't list a break-in mileage/RPM it probably is N/A to the newer models. At the factory they are required to run all engines for a certain amount of time, maybe that enough for rings to seat etc. I dont know for sure.

I think the break in was suppost to be for the older cars. Over time it just kept getting passed along. OUr cars are so smart that the ECU learns your driving habits and adjust to your driving.

The manual calls for varying speeds and rpms of less than 4k for the first 1200 miles and no full throttle acceleration in any gear. After what you've been through, why on earth would you want to take a risk deviating from what the factory calls for?
