Any tips for a Newbie looking to buy a G?

I'm going to start looking at dealerships tomorrow for some 07+G35 Sedans.

I've been interested in having a G35 for a while. Initially when I was buying first car I was going to get a 03 G35 for around 11,000 Over a year ago. I ended up getting a 07 325i Bmw. I just recently found a good deal too good to pass up so I sold it to the guy and said bye to the baby. I'm now on the market for another car and even though I really love the handling of a bmw. I would rather trade it up for a nice engine. Seeing that a 335i and 350is have the the horsepower I'm looking for in a stock car they seemed a bit out of my price range for the speed I want. Which brings me back to the g35

I'm looking for something around the price range of 20,000 and I cant really afford much more once i'm hit with all the fee's and tax.

So if anyone has any tips that they can pass on I'd definitely appreciate it.

Also I was wanted to get a manual transmission but i cant really find any.. Is that only included with a certain type of G35's? or maybe even the G37's?

yes, the g35 sedans come in 6-speed. A bit harder to find, but they do exist. Watch out for cars with peeling trim, as some dealerships will refuse to replace interior trim under warranty. The motor in the 07+ g35 is much quicker than the old 03-04 models.

Hmm okay good advice.. since most of the cars that I will be looking at are still under warranty. I'm hoping to get a car as soon as possible because it really does suck not having a car I don't know if i'm willing to wait until I can find a 6speed though =/ and my guess is changing transmission is more of a hassle than its probably worth right ?

Look for a 6spd if you really want it because in the end you'll be happier, the auto actually is very nice and thats what I have in my 07 g35x. If you get a 6spd your car will for sure be rear wheel drive as long as you're ok with that.

Getting an 08 for the warranty seems like a good idea. Just for a couple extra hundred or so depending on the mileage of course. If the cars been in an accident does it void anything out of the factory warranty? I see a few cars or a lot rather that are under factory warranty but some have been into accidents.

I just saw a 7speed shiftable automatic for sale on autotrader where I live but I have a good feeling this car is sold It's at a good price too

Is on the top of the list at the moment. Worst thing about the car is that the interior is grey =( which almost makes me want to cry. The people there were really blunt but fair. The others really tried to take me for a ride. The car is under warranty until next year october and power train untill 70k so its a really good buy. I left a deposit to hold the car while we work out the last few details of the car.

These cars are pretty mean! They have some power, cant wait to start modding one of these its going to be so sweet.

Also question about the transmission: He said it was tiptonic or something or the other. I'm not sure what that is.. anyone care to elaborate ?

Try to find one that has a clear bra installed, the paint is one of the low points on Gs. If you do find a 6speed there are some easy clutch tweaks that make the clutch much more "user-friendly" (there are some DIY threads on this site about it). If you get one w/ some warranty left be sure to get all the TSBs applied that pertain to your vehicle. The sunroof and throttle sensitivity come to mind. If it has the touchy throttle and you like it that way don't get the TSB, it's not reversable but it also makes the cruise control a lot smoother so IMO it's worth it. The leather on the sides of the lower seat cushion are quite thin & prone to cracking (and eventually tearing), be sure to check this area closely.

It's an automatic that you can slide to the left to engage "sport" or DS mode this holds the RPMs longer and gives a quicker responding ride. You can then shift the lever down to manually shift through the gears, the gears are then displayed in the instrument display.

It's not really like driving a manual, it'll still shift to the next gear automatically when you approach red line and it doesn't down or upshift instantly a bit of hesitation but is definately better than having no manual shifting option.

I like the 5speed auto in the 07s & 08s better than the 7 speed autos in the G37s. I've had both and the 5 speed seems to always be in the right place at the right time, can't say that about the 7 speed.

Haven't owned a 6speed manual but driven a couple, the clutch isn't the best but driving a manual G will put a bigger smile on your face than the automatic

I was looking for specifically manual as I have had a manual before and really enjoyed the vehicle. The benefits for manual in th 2003-2006 year was that you would get 18" sport wheels, VLSD, Sport Suspension and couple other minor details. I love the 6 speed and the clutch i am finally getting use to on this vehicle. I think the maintenance on the 6 speed will end up costing more due to having to replace clutch/flywheel in the future. The enjoyment out of being able to control what gear you are in is AMAZING along with gas savings of being able to upshift into a higher gear, skip gears or just coast.

Do not rush your self as buyers remorse is something you have to deal with. I would recommend you drive 350z in manual and g35 coupe in manual. It is hard to find a manual 2007 or 2008 or heck any manual sedan is extremely hard to find. Test drive those vehicles in manual and see what you think if it is something you really want or just sounds cooler than it really is.

The tiptronic shifting leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I have an '07 and it's very unresponsive. That being said the auto is pretty awesome, very torquey and if you punch it will take the rpms very high. I would have no misconceptions about the feel of a MT because it feels nothing like one and you will be disappointed. Hold out for the MT if that's what you want, I'm kind of wishing I had. Also, I took my car into the shop at Crest Infinity in DFW, they let me have a G37 to drive while working on it. I noticed significant differences in the acceleration and torque, as in not as much of either. Just my observations and opinions!
