after seeing all the constant complaint threads about the 7AT in the myG37 forum

I have come to the conclusion that I love my 5AT, not jerky at all and none of that awful "gear hunting" feeling when in the city or cruising. After driving my fam's G37 along with multiple loaners, I too would be complaining... a car should not feel like that, ever.
The TSB didn't resolve much cause it's still there. I haven't driven the v36, 6 speed, but i'd imagine it to be the best of both worlds.
Yeah our 5AT's have pretty bad gas mileage, but we did save a chunk of change from sticking to our generation. We spend so much on mods anyway, can we really complain about spending a couple hundred extra a year hah
just some thoughts...

some people were saying they drove in DS to avoid the frequent shifting and that is killing the mpg anyway so you are back to square one lol

I don't know much about transmissions gear ratios and its probably already been said but it seems to me that Infiniti would have been wise to have the first five gears ot he 7AT the same as the 5AT and then just use the 6&7 for OD when you are cruising at 65 and 75mph. Perhaps better yet, just have a 6AT?

Or learn to drive a stick... it's not difficult at all. Just takes a bit of practice.
When I was 18, I bought a brand new 89 Chevy Z24 (5MT)
I had never in my life driven a stick and had to have a friend drive the car home when I took delivery.
Once I got it home, it was only a few short minutes before I was cruising around town. Very easy to learn.

Almost the same here with my 95 maxima. Had 20 minutes of learning time on my in-law's car. Picked up my new 5MT maxima from the dealer, nervous as can be, and stalled out 4 times on the way home. Easy to learn from there. Clutch was over 100k miles before I let her go after 12 years.

Good god, I can fool myself into believing I am not so old - until I write something out like the above paragraph.

Had an 07 G35 and currently have an 09 G37. I'd really like to have the 5AT mated to the 3.7 VVEL, I think that would be just about the ideal setup. I prefer manual gearboxes but my wife drives this car more than me and she won't have a car without a slushbox. I've gottten used to the 7ATs quirks and it's not as bad as some have made it out to be, but if you've put a lot of miles on both the 5AT and the 7AT you come to really appreciate the simpler & straightforward performance of the 5 speed. Like previously mentioned it would have been ideal to just add a real tall OD gear to the 5AT for strictly no-load highway cruising. The 7 spd gearing is so closely clustered that they really didn't accomplish significant mpg boosts, I'm getting about 2-2.5 mpg better on the hwy and not any noticeable difference in town. If they kept the 5AT gearing and added an OD cog to cruise at 75mph at around 2,000 rpm then I think everyone would be happy, at least until the discussion turns to the crappy Infiniti paint, lol.

I taught my sister how to drive a stick when she was 16 and I was 19. She's easily the worst driver in the world and I'm not exactly the best teacher. 21 years later and she's still driving manual.
