IMHO, you care too much about something that doesn't matter as much as you want it to.

Everyone uses what they become accustomed to and rarely would someone ever try all the brands to see what performed the best. Main reason, the word "perform" could mean any number of things.

Some oil could, in theory, give you more HP. At the same time, it could protect the integrity of the engine less. Some oil could give you more MPG while at the same time, cost you HP. Then, there is the whole synthetic versus blend versus conventional oil debate. Also, it depends on what your goal is (IE, can you only afford to spend $30 per oil change)

Since "performance" is not clearly defined and could not be proven with any certainty when it comes to brands of oil, one's preferred brand of oil is solely based on one's opinion of why they use it versus another brand.

Well, you could be the guinnea pig and try a "regular" oil first, then Amsoil/German castrol next and give an opinion on the difference. However, shy of a scientific way of measuring any differences, any perceivable gain could be a placebo affect.

Are you sure the dealer wasn't talking about the VHR motor and the need for ester based oil?

Are you sure you're not trying to solve an issue that doesn't even pertain to the HR motor?

As I understood it...
For a time, the dealers were recommending an ester based oil for vq37VHR (G37) motors to quiet valve train noise (with the VVEL system) upon start-up or something. It was never 'required' and later became 'recommended' ONLY for those experiencing noisy start-ups. As far as I know they never extended any such recommendation to the vq35HR motors since they have a different valve train.

EDIT: bahaha, E-ticket, you beat to the punch!

otbg - you have a valid point I won't lie but I still would like to go with the best for this application.

E-Ticket - One of the dearerships I believe in Cali said that the Ester based is only needed for the VQ37VHR motors because of the VVEL. But others also were stating for my application to use the Ester based. Def. not quite as much as well here is my notes:

The reason vqsmile and myself ask is because I've never read of an HR mtor needing ester based oil until your post, and I've been here almost 3 years.

Me, personally, I'd take those dealer recommendations with a grain of salt. Especially since it's a dealership and, well, most are clueless.

Furthermore, if you read up about the ester oil on myg37, you'll see that a good number state that the ester oil didn't even help at all, and the car still sounded like a diesel motor. IMO, if you're going to do it, do it for the purported "better" protection instead of a dealer telling you it'll reduce the nvh. But, don't forget to send out your current oil for a blackstone test, as well as whatever oil you choose to use. At least that way you have some quantitive results to feel better from.

However, I'm still willing to bet the expensive stuff is only marginally better, if even better, than the off the shelf mobil 1 from wallyworld

E-Ticket you def. have a point as well. I didn't know that there was a bunch of people who reported results on myg37. I just actually learned about this forum today from one of the dealers in Cali. As far as sending my oil out to blackstone, how does that work exactly?

How much do I need to send? How do you send it? Little glass bottle or? Basically what have you found to be the easiest and most efficient way to send it to them? Oh yea how much does it cost...?

Thanks for all the info and if that's the true case maybe I'll do some searching around on the myg37 forum to see what they're using.... I don't maybe I'll rock Ams.... lol May sound funny but just the vibe I perceived from the two companies was that:

Amsoil = More Domestic Car Use
Motul = More Import Car & Crotch Rocket Use

My Recent Report

I just got a report in. My car has nearly 100K miles on it at this point. I've always gotten the oil changed at my local nissan dealership. My refill interval is 6K miles although sometimes I push to 6.5K.

There are some interesting finds in there but realistically I'm not sure if I'm going to bother doing anything different. Things seem to be wearing well. I'm going to send them some transmission fluid next time I change it out. I just did it recently so it probably won't be for a while.

Use WIX filters, Mobil 1 and change at 5K intervals. Driving is 60%hwy/40%city. I haven't sent my oil for oil analysis but feel it's fine to change at these intervals. IMHO, the limiting factor is not the oil (which could easily go another 5K) but the filter and me wanting to stay within limitations of my (now extended) Infiniti warranty.

Some dealerships are so bad as to change the brand and type on a quarterly basis. What they once recommended as "the best" would now be relegated to "don't use that stuff".

All that said, the HR motor is very oil friendly and will take to pretty much any decent one out there. Personally, i use Mobile 1 EP. You can refer to my running UOA thread here. Pay particular attention to my own notes.
