engine chatter?!?

For about a month, I have been hearing a strange noise from the engine.

It can be heard between 1000-1200 rpms, and its more pronounced and easily heard if it's done while the car is parked...although it can also be heard while driving very slow within those rpm ranges. Its much louder when the car is cold, but even after it warms up its still there.

It does NOT sound rhythmic, does not sound like a knock, it sounds like a lug nut inside a beer can being shaken around.... the car drives fine, and at high speeds everything sounds normal. I can say with certainty that its definitely coming from the engine bay.

Gonna go to the dealer soon, but has anyone had a experience like this with a 2nd gen? I have a 2008 35x.

Take it to the dealer. Let them deal with it.

Could be some valve (pcv ?), actuator, or solenoid perhaps. I seem to recall there having been an issue with the g37's making a noise related to one of those. You can do a lot toward finding it with an improvised stethoscope.

Mine does the same thing. Check your catalytic converters. Had one of mine replaced under warranty but now the other one ticks/rattles depending on rpms. If you're still under warranty then great but if not they run around a thousand bucks each.

I'd love to hear a sound clip, as I've been getting a similar type of sound over the past few months. I never heard this sound previously since I've owned the car.

Ugghhh damned dealer didn't find anything..... I have to for back in a week for a broken back seat cup holder, so gonna have the stupid mechanic listen with me.

Its so Friggin obvious, the guy must be deaf.....

On a brighter note, my front rotors were replaced cause they found the "judder" tsb during a test drive .... funny thing is, I am pretty sure it was already replaced 2 years ago but no complaints here lol.

Ill try to record a sound tonight.
