Should this be covered by warranty?
Should this be covered by warranty?
Attached is a photo of my steering wheel. Pretty bad paint chipping. My warranty expires in April 2012. I see this issue is a known defect with the G - certainly not tantamount to cars going on fire etc. but it is a bothersome cosmetic issue.
Should this be covered and is the only solution an entire new steering wheel?
Thanks for any input.

Yes, known issue and they should cover it if you are still under the original factory warranty
If you are under the Elite Care Extended Warranty, then no most likely will not be covered.

Yep, it is a well known defect and, as others have said, it has a fairly good instance of coverage among dealers. Some are more stubborn than others, but MANY people get this problem covered under the original 4/60 factory warranty. It is conceivable to replace that plastic piece as a component, as I have heard of it being available separately, but inexplicably the dealerships approach it as a total swap of the steering wheel. Frequently, the inside door grabs (finishers) are replaced for similar scratching, so you may want to look into addressing those at the same time. When you speak to the dealer, don't accept any suggestion from them that you must have been really severe with them either, it can and does happen with even the slightest provocation( ie."use").
Also, I think what willdogs should have said is "If you are ONLY under the Elite Care Extended Warranty, then no most likely will not be covered." The "only" is necessary because the factory and extended warranties can actually overlap and have both coverages in effect at the same time. (sorry to nitpick Will

Dealer response
Thanks for the replies. I emailed the GM of the dealership and he replied within the hour; I was impressed with that. His response is that he will show the picture to the service manager Monday and then get with me about "replacing the trim." When I first saw the peeling, I wondered if the plastic trim insert in the wheel could be replaced but it seems that the fix is the entire steering wheel. Perhaps the GM is unaware or perhaps he is right. It does seem overkill to have to replace an entire steering wheel for some paint chipping but if the peeling piece cannot be singly replaced, I don't see what else can be done.
By the way, I am still under the original warranty until April 2012. Thanks again for the replies and I will post about the outcome. vqsmile can you please explain a little more about the inside door grabs - is this the piece that holds the inside latch to open the driver's door?

THere are many, many threads here covering this topic and all the related pieces involved. A few searches should give you more than enough background to work with the dealer.
good luck

yea had all this done and within about 4-5 months later on the door pulls had the same problem so I gave up and dealt with it. (I dont wear any rings, and rarely even have anything in there) Just cheap I guess.
lol they managed to put some defected ones they had lying around in the parts dept. the new ones has the top part made out of rubberized plastic. It's not a painted rubber coating so it's impossible to scratch. on the new ones you can "mark" your finger nail on it, then pass it with ur thumb and the mark goes away.
^ whs, the revised ones dont actually chip off like before so they must have replaced yours with the older 07s they had lying around since infiniti does not make that part/finish anymore
I just had mine done the other day. The chips were very minor, nothing compared to yours. I'm actually surprised Infiniti hasn't just made a replacement plastic trim piece. The service manager also said hand sanitizer breaks down the paint and causes it to chip.
