question on maintenance and in need of rear brakes

I just had my car at the dealer and as I have seen in some other posts they gave me a laundry list of items to do to my car since I am at about 35k. Below is the list and please let me know if you think I can get some of these items done myself or cheaper or really what should be done.

1. Need rear brake pads-dealer quoted $239 for pads and resurfacing, then another $90 for a brake flush. I just did the front brakes and rotors on my wife's car and it ran me for drilled/slotted rotors and pads about $240. Should I go that route for the rear?

2. Tranny flush-$168

3. Cooling flush-$102

4. Throttle body service with fuel injector service and engine decarb-total around $420

5. Rear differential-$90

6. Power steering flush-$90

Some of this seems overkill for 34.5k. I thought it was funny they quoted me $89.00 for 2 air filters and $102 for the cabin filter. I think others said that is about the right figure from the dealer but that is insane.

On a positive side I complained about the scratches on the steering wheel trim and door pull. They replaced both the trim and the whole steering wheel. I actually thought just the trim piece would get replaced. They also sold me a new battery for a good price claiming mine was not holding a solid charge. I figured for the $50 it was worth a replacing a 4 year old battery for a new one with a warranty.

1) rears are a little harder than fronts, but if you were able to do the front, you will be able to do the rears

2) how many qts of fluid for the tranny flush? Should be at least 12 qts of fluid

3) is your coolant contaminated? flush isn't necessary - do a drain & fill, it's standard procedure - make sure to use distilled or demineralized water only to mix your OEM coolant.

4) use a bottle of this http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/api.aspx and call it a day. TB cleaned better to be left alone until you start having start/idle issues (if you ever even have them).

5) what kind of fluid is being used? I would insist on some kind of synthetic gear oil - make sure new washers are used

6) $90 is a reasonable price for this service, especially at the dealer - synthetic fluid shouldn't cost more than $5 or so..

1. That's what I did, that way I could do it all myself for free. 239 per axle isn't a deal anyways
2. well I just do drain and fill, but I have 6MT. Lots of conflicting schools of thought on this.
3. I know you can do this cheaply with one of those machines, just don't trust a lube place to put the right stuff in. It's not that hard to drain it out tho.
4. what last poster said, dont do it until your idle is being wacky
5. there is a good DYI here to do this, it doesn't even take that much fluid.
6. I just did the DYI on here, and used a fluid pump following the dyi procedure and ran about 2 quarts of fluid through it. It took less than 30 mins.

I've heard you want to replace coolant yearly in extreme zones. If I had to pay someone I would pay them for
1) braid fluid bleed/replacement
2) auto tranny flush (if I had one) - MT I would do myself
3) coolant flush

do the rest myself.

You can actually buy a coolant tester to tell you if your coolant needs replacing.

I'm wondering why your rears even need replacing at only 35K miles? Is the dealer just trying to drum up some business from you prematurely? I got over 55K out of mine. It isn't hard to do them though. I say DIY.

2. Tranny flush-$168
That's somewhat a generic term. Most likely the dealer will just pull your tranny pan plug, drain about 4-5 quarts, refill it and call it a "flush". You can do the same for just the cost of the Matic-S fluid ($10-15 per quart)

3. Cooling flush-$102
Again, dealer probably will just drain and refill given so few miles. It's easy to do yourself. I suggest using the newer coolant that's rated even longer than the original coolant it came with.

4. Throttle body service with fuel injector service and engine decarb-total around $420
What a bunch of BS! They make a fortune doing this kind of stuff. Just buy some additive, or start using good 1st tier gas, and leave the throttle body alone unless you're having issues.

5. Rear differential-$90
Again, not hard at all. Make sure you use an oil with the correct weight and GL-# number spec and you'll be fine.

6. Power steering flush-$90
There is a very nice DIY for that task here.

Some of this seems overkill for 34.5k. (kinda, but if you have a warranty, your better off keeps things on schedule) I thought it was funny they quoted me $89.00 for 2 air filters and $102 for the cabin filter. I think others said that is about the right figure from the dealer but that is insane.

Price wise everything is fine except 420 for the fuel injector and throttle body cleaning... totally useless and expensive. Go buy some techron for the injector and clean the throttle ur self using the diy articles on this site.

This is an amazing price for a dealer. I needed new rear brake pads at 37k as I do a lot of around town driving. One dealer quoted me just over $600 for pads, resurfacing and brake flush and another falsely claimed G35 rear rotors should never be machined and quoted just over $700 for rear pads, rotors and brake flush. Paid an indy $300 for all.

2. Tranny flush-$168

If this is a 12-16 quart flush dealers typically charge $299, great price for a dealer

3. Cooling flush-$102

From what I can see coolant capacity is 10-quarts for a flush, and Nissan coolant 50-50 is $20 per gallon so it's $60 in fluid alone, again seems a very good price.

4. Throttle body service with fuel injector service and engine decarb-total around $420

I'm suspicious if this is needed, is the car idling roughly?

5. Rear differential-$90

Many have posted this should be done at 30k or so as the original fluid gets metal shavings and most recommend switching from the original Nissan gear oil to a synthetic

6. Power steering flush-$90

I'm suspicious if this is needed so soon.

True prices are not bad (except TB cleaning).. comparing to my local infinti dealer they want 345 per axle on brakes. Those prices sound closer to nissan dealer prices. Just make sure if you are getting true flushes and not drain and refill.

A guy in my local club takes his G to the nissan dealer with his own oil and filter and they change it for 8 bucks(including brass crush washer), if you are lazy that's a good way to go

pretty much everything you listed can be done by yourself with very little mechanical skills and some DIY intsructions which are posted on this website. good luck and save your money for better Sh*t for your car and do the stuff yourself.

1. $239 is a good price from the dealer for brakes. I would not upgrade my rear brakes to performance brakes without doing the fronts as well. Several aftermarket brake people do not recommend doing so (EBC for one)

2. Tranny flush at 35k miles seems overkill, that price is nice but I doubt you need it before 60K.

3. Cooling flush at 35k is ridiculous, new coolant lasts till 100k easily. You can buy test strips at auto parts store to see if its still good. Skip this

4. $420 is absurd for throttle body service, most dealers do it for $150, skip unless your idle is rough

5. Rear differential should not need service at 35k, check your manual there is a maintenance schedule in there. If it is on the schedule for 30k its only on the premium schedule. Also there is a DIY on you tube and it looks easy.

6. Power steering flush $90, The fluid is probably fine, you have low miles, also there is a DIY on here that also seems fairly simple. Skip this

Well, rather than just going by mileage alone, coolant service schedule is also based off of time. It may still retain cooling properties, but you could be losing its anti-corrosive qualities by extending usage beyond the recommended time window. I recommend the newer blue coolant that Nissan is using. It has a significantly longer service life than the older (original) green kind, and yet is 100% compatible.

I live in AZ and the coolant gets some serious use in the summer.

I thank everyone for the input. I am going to a local place for another brake check. They will do an axle (front or back) for $129 and that includes resurfacing if needed and is lifetime on the pads. Meaning you still pay labor, but future pads are free.

This same place also offers about everything I asked about above. They have for $325 a trans flush, coolant flush, power steering flush, fuel injector cleaning and brake flush. Maybe a bit overkill but for the price I may consider doing it. They use Valvoline fluids. I will double check the manual, but are there some specific fluids I should use for the replacement?

YES!!

DO NOT use anything but the Nissan Matic-S tranny fluid for your transmission. (Nissan # 999MP-MTS00P)
