I was in WAL-MART today getting stuff for my oil change and I got the wrong stuff. I wanted to try pennzoil ultra but I got 5w20 on accident. There was a guy in the isle next to me getting arrested for sleeping (up against the ammo). So I busted out my phone to record the drama because he was hammered. Ended up getting no good footage and the wrong oil. FAIL. I put the oil in and performed my oil change. Should I go get some 5w30 right away or do you think I will be ok with the 5w20. Weather will be 40-85 for the next few months.

Have you had oil analysis on royal purple against Pen Ultra? Is royal purple definitively a better oil than the Pen Ultra? It's funny because last time I checked, Pen Ultra was most comparable to Motul 300V which is far superior than Royal Purple for the HR/VHR motors. If you have some documents (analysis summary would do) for both oil types, I'd love to see the comparison between the two.

 

well i havent tried that oil, im comparing it to Mobil 1 synthetic, to me the RP was the better choice, but im jsut basing that on my own personal experience i use the RP oil n luv it, quieter ride and runs alot smoother comparing to mobil 1, its also the same price at peformance improvements , but yeah jsut accept it thread jacker, lol,

 

M1 is junk. All VQ motors hate it. I used it once few years ago for less than 300 miles because I had no choice at that moment. Needless to say, I changed it out to Motul 8100 and oh boy, what a huge different it makes. Totally felt like the Motuls changed the characteristics of my HR entirely.

 

I use M1 and have perfectly fine blackstone results.

 

5w20 is pretty light stuff. I can't say it will cause a problem, but if it were mine, and knowing how I like to listen to that VQ sing, I'd bite the bullet and put the correct spec in. What would you tell yourself if you guessed wrong and ended up with an issue : "What the heck, at least I saved $25 on the oil" ???

Try Motul once! She'll love you back so much more.

 

5W20 and 5W30 are the same in the cold.

 

So i'm curious, how is the Motul better?

I don't mind trying it out. But, having had nearly 60k worth of UOA on the M1-EP with somewhat extended OCI's and track duty mixed in, and everything turning out relatively well -- I want to know what's on the Motul that would be worth changing to and warrants the $ premium.

p.s. I'm genuinely curious, don't mean to come across as sarcasm.

 

It sounds like I will be changing the fluid back to 5w30. better safe than sorry for sure. I have been using Mobile 1 full synthetic and heard all trash talking about it here so I wanted to try the Penn Ultra to see if the motor feels any better. Sucks because now I don't wanna run my car hard with 20 in it. lol
Guess it'll be a just a flush with 5w20. I'm interrested in the Motul now......

 

No sense wasting that 5w20, just drain it into a clean pan and give to a Honda owner.


Put whatever synthetic oil in it that you want, but understand that doing so is really just to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. It isn't going to make a bit of difference that you will benefit from in the long run for your car. It will wind up in a wrecking yard someday regardless, and it almost definitely WON'T be because of lubrication deficiencies of one synthetic vs another (or even dino oil changed at more frequent intervals for that matter).

Royal Purple is garbage, it has been documented for years.

 

I think in the end, 5-20 was only made to satisfy CAFE requirements for some manufacturers.
