Drive Shaft bolt shearing Help

I was hoping you guys would be able to help. I am not very car savvy at all. I have a 2007 G35x. As I was driving, it felt as though the bottom was falling out. I took it to the dealer and they say a bolt on the drive shaft shear and we may need a new bell house/transmission. They have estimated repairs of at least $6000! Has anyone had any problems like this? I am not even sure it would be worth putting all this money into the car at this point. Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks!

How in the world can a bolt come off the drive shaft then causing damage to the tranny? i'll be weary of that dealership. Take it somewhere else to get a 2nd inspection.

Your car came with a 6 yr/ 70k mile drive-train warranty; are you still within those limits? If so, it's very likely that it would be covered unless the failure was caused by damage. If so, then let them go ahead and do it. However, if you do have to pay out of pocket for repairs, as was mentioned above, you need to get another opinion/estimate on it. Most likely, the estimate you got was based on brand new parts and dealership labor rates. A reputable transmission repair shop could probably source a re-manufactured or possibly even a salvage unit for far less, and their labor rates would likely be significantly less.

Welcome to G35Driver!

Thanks for your insight! We definitely need to get a second opinion. The only problem is the car can't be driven. I guess we could tow to another repair shop. Apparently a specialized mechanic is coming to the dealership to assess it. We will know more this evening. Will keep you posted...

SO, are you still within your drive-train warranty coverage? ( 6yr / 70k )

Also, if there's any chance you could get some pics of the damage while they have it up on a lift, it would be VERY helpful to show another shop in case you have to decide where to have it towed to for service elsewhere. Besides that, you could also post them here because we all really want to see it too.

I doubt it, since the dealer already isn't doing it for free.

so im assuming you're over 70k miles then? otherwise this has to be covered under warranty since there is no reason that they can come up with to blame this on you

^^ kool, he's not the OP, so I'm guessing that's just his presumption given that the OP noted that the dealer was estimating 6k for repairs. I'd still like to hear from the OP as to whether or not he's still in warranty or not though, as I could see a dealership possibly looking for an out on such a large repair. Theoretically speaking, even if he was within warranty, if there were any signs of damage to the driveshaft that could have caused it (ran over something, etc.), they'd have an out for coverage.
