I had a honda prelude with a blown headgasket once, it would pass all pressure tests, but you could see a little oil in the coolant. You never know, it still ran, until I swapped out the motor and the problem went away.

 

i flushed out the coolant yesterday. so ill be sure to check if theres any oil. Thanks again for all the help everyone!

 

UPDATE! Figured out the problem, Both fans arent working and when all this happened my AC was on full so thats what caused the coolant to boil out of the reservoir. Just ordered a new fan assembly and will know for sure once installed.

 

ouch that sucks! Kinda weird though. I think those fans are powered by the big fuses under the hood.

 

yea, i just picked up the car from infiniti and they had diagnosed it as "the fans" when i told them thats what it was. So they charged me only 1/2 price for diagnosis. Hooked up power directly to fans and they wouldnt work, and relay was fine. So the motors went out is what im guessing. Will know for sure later today

 

I really glad for you that you found something solid to explain the overheating.

However, I am puzzled as to the timeline and what the dealership did, and did not, do. It seems you took the car in for diagnosing the cooling system for inexplicable coolant loss and fears of HG failure. They did a pressure test and a compression test, concluded the reservoir must have been overfilled, and then they released the car to you to wait and see !??! Then, you took it home, changed the coolant, and discovered that the fans weren't working !??! , so you ordered the fans and took it back and they concurred with your diagnosis, yet still charged you for diagnostic time !??!

I think they were horribly irresponsible to not ensure the proper operation of the entire cooling system, which would INCLUDE the fans, when you took it in the first time. It's a tremendous oversight on their part to neglect checking the fans. They basically could have cost you an engine by releasing the car without checking them. Plus, and to add insult to injury, they charged you for diagnostic time after their screw up. Am I missing something here? I think I'd have a discussion with the service manager and at least get a reimbursement for the diag time.

No this is what happened. After the initial overheating i parked the car, refilled coolant etc myself to try and figure out what was wrong. Then when everyone said it might be HG i took the car to a local indy and had the compression test done and he said HG was fine. So i went home happy that all was good until the car started overheating again. Then i thought i might have air in the system so i tried bleeding numerous times myself but the temp gauge kept fluctuating. So i bit the bullet and just took it to infiniti and had them do a coolant flush for $150. I figured it was worth it so i didn't have to deal with manually bleeding it myself. Then as i drove away from the dealership not even 5 seconds later the fluctuating began, so i turned around and went back. They rechecked everything and as i was in the waiting room i read an old thread on g35 forums about how AC didn't blow cold, which mine didnt, and how his coolant boiled out of the reservoir. So i told the service rep that its probably my fans, he said they will know for sure after the tech is done and gave me a loaner car for the day. Next morning they called me saying the fans arent getting any power, $650 for aftermarket with install or $950 for oem installed. I said no thanks ill do it myself and only paid $65 for the diagnosis because i had told them that was the problem. So all in all it turned out alright, service guy was pretty cool, it was more my fault.

 

^^ Ahhh, that makes much more sense, and you were wise to opt out of their repair prices for a simple fan hookup. I think you should either be able to replace it with a good used salvage replacement set of fans, or else just replace the motors themselves with something from an auto parts chain store; gotta be WAY cheaper than those prices you got.

 

problem fixed today! bought an aftermarket fan from a local auto parts store for 170 bux and installed it myself in about 25 minutes. Also with all the downtime i was able to paint my calipers black, install r1concepts drilled and slotted rotors, install my new ebay trunk spoiler, plastidip my wheels, and give the car a nice wash....not sure how i feel about this spoiler though lol
