^ Dealers which provide this service use cooler lines which is a method mentioned in the service manual. The Paper you talk about mentions solvents which the dealer machines do not use.

^^ Ah ...ok, that would make sense then. But still, as I was told by my dealer, they aren't even supposed to do that unless there is a specific necessity to; it's not recommend for just maintenance. Something along the lines of it potentially creating more problems for a used tranny than they'd be preventing.

You know, regular drain/refills will do just fine, and typically cost less. There's also less risk to the transmission and you're renewing the fluids at every refill -- which is a much shorter interval than the flush.

for 179, thats a drain and fill not a flush. im always worried about getting the right amount of fluid back in there doing it myself.

Accurate measuring is the simplest way. Assuming you're not leaking fluid that needs to be replaced also, you're just replacing what you took out. The catch is that you have to be sure that you measure the fluid when it's the same temperature as the fluid you're replacing it with. Since I'm so cheap and don't have a nice handy calibrated toxic waste collection/containment receptacle, I usually collect a a bunch of 1 gallon plastic screw-cap milk jugs in advance.

Next, I drain the fluid overnight so it's at room temp in the drain pan the next day. Then I just pour it into the milk jugs for measurement. If you get a 'good' drain, you'll probably have more than a gallon, but it could also come in right around it too. Anyway, for any jug that's not full, I just set it next to a another empty jug, which I then fill with water that I pour from a 1-quart measuring cup so I can tell exactly how much water it took to fill the jug to the same height as the tranny fluid jug (sitting next to it).

If you are careful with the handling of the fluid during the draining and transferring to the jugs, you can account for all but a couple tablespoons (tops) of residue along the way; or just an extra 'sip' from the bottle when you're refilling. The good thing is, when you're all done, the fluid is all packed and ready to go to the hazardous recycle drop.
