Car Overheated and Went Into Limp Mode - Clueless
#17
Just picked it up. Wasn't able to talk to any of the Service people since they were closed.
However what i paid for the resistor does stand as a service credit. So the repair was free. Replaced the thermostat and lower hose due to leaking, also bled the cooling system.
Went for a bit of a drive again, this time the temperatures remained just slightly below the middle like how it normally is.

I put about 300km on it so far in the last 2 weeks.
Temperatures are all good!
However drove it this evening and the Service Engine Soon light came on while driving... car drives fine and temperatures are all good. Now that is a mystery. Filled up on the weekend but if its the gas cap, should have lit up a couple days ago.
Another mystery to solve... once again!

Hmm, at first glance the P0420 looks like a bad cat or O2 sensor, but the fact that you have a pending p0081 gives me some pause to consider whether the issue with the valve timing is causing the issues with the emissions . . . but then it wouldn't make sense that the problem cat is on bank 1 and the valve timing solenoid issue is on bank 2. I prefer to think things are usually connected and relevant, but I guess I'm not seeing it with this one
I guess I would though, want to make sure neither are connected with recent events for the car (but I suspect they are). It Is possible that when the dealer worked on it for either fluid swap or later repair for the overheat, they could have inadvertently disconnected (or even damaged) the connection to the VVT solenoid, so it's worth a shot seeing if something is amiss there.
Then it also occurs to me that if they swapped your tranny, they probably manhandled the cat as well (cats and O2 sensors are rather delicate), as I'm fairly sure the exhaust gets removed during a tranny swap. I think you may want to revisit the dealer, express your serious concerns with all the issues you have been having AFTER they worked on it, and then I'd even suggest you might want to consider do it LOUDLY. Sometimes, this is what it takes to get them out of the "Sure, we'll fix anything, but you're paying for it" mode.

EDIT: Just to be clear, you had your coolant services at the dealership, right? (ie. You didn't do that yourself)

Yeah had my coolant services at the dealership.
But yeah exactly, the car was pretty much fine until they swapped the tranny - then all these things started to crop up.
I scheduled an appointment Tuesday morning actually (Monday is a holiday). Will see what they say about it this time.

On the one hand, you hate to go back to the dealer that likely screwed up in the first, yet you pretty much have to if you want to have a chance at their covering it. I wish you the best in negotiating with them. Perhaps they will redeem themselves by at least owning up to their mistakes.

Update... again.
Just wanted to let you guys know of an update.
They're going to replace the catalytic converter once the part arrives. The P0420 code occured on 10 occassions apparently all at about the same speed (refer to the freeze frame data).
Also regarding the P0081 code, they told me they won't touch the valve timing until they can read the computer again when the car comes in or if the check engine light comes back on. They dont want to do anything about it yet since it would be a 2-3 day job apparently. But they will replace it if requested.
Btw, all of this is covered under warranty. But its just so time consuming.
So will report back.
