Which direction should the MAF face ?

So I followed the DIY and cleaned my MAF.... I was disappointed to find it completely clean after 75000 miles on my car... So I guess something else is giving me crappy gas mileage.

Anyway, while reinstalling the maf I had a question.... I forgot what direction it was originally facing. Nissan didn't make it so that it can only fit one way... It can be put in backwards or forwards..

So my guess is, the hole that has the tiny wires showing should face forward, so that the air can hit the wires as they flown into the throttle body.... Am I right? Or should the hole face backwards? In which case no air will hit it since the back does not have any holes?
