2007 G35S 18-month review
It's been 18 months since I bought a '07 G35S sedan with ~58k miles, now at 80k. I put a ton of thought and research into choosing the car when I bought it, and decided it was a great choice. Here are my thoughts...
Pros
- Acceleration from 60-100mph and up is almost astounding, honestly the first few gears feel pretty heavy, but after that -- or if the car is already at speed -- jumping 20-30mph at once is a flick of the pedal...
- Special 'super' mode when going above 80-85mph -- feels tighter, no loss of control but MORE control, plenty of additional speed on tap... bumps to 110-120mph easily. When it feels tight and focused at high speeds, the car seems of high quality.
- Acceleration in general is fast, the 3.5L can do some work
- Engine sounds nice and not like a whistly bimmer (hehe), it's the tradeoff for that heavy 1st-2nd gear (vrrrm)
- Nice audio, controls, really nice AC/air settings, heat, and filters, love the steering wheel (a lot), very comfy seats in the Sport edition - my needs are not very advanced, but I am well-cared-for by this car's interior amenities
- Still don't see any car on the road that I like the styling of substantially more than the G35/37, that doesn't cost more than $120k ... A8 is close
- Girlfriend likes driving it too
Cons
- Gas mileage less than great, my average is 21mpg with tons of city driving, avg speed about 40mph (according to the stats the car logs...which are nice btw)
- Noisy AC/fan intake (probably not a unique problem to this car)
- Transmission is a bit laggy. Feels pretty great at speed, but when starting up fast or when given a burst of gas, it feels like I hit the pedal and wait (just for a moment). There has to be some difference between this trans and a Porsche so I chalk it up to that, and have something to look forward to, lol... shifting opportunistically in manumatic mode can mostly alleviate this, but I don't use it very often ...maybe this is the computer timing screwing with my driving habits?
- Brakes wear out fast. I'm still trying to get to the bottom of this. Going to buy my own rotors/pads next time and see what happens...
Maintenance I've done during my ownership:
- New tires
- New brake pads + rotor resurfacing (squeaking again after 1,000 miles...)
- Rear differential fluid replacement
- Replaced all the filters - cabin started smellin musty, was worried it was A/C bacteria or whatever, but it smells great now
My one BIG MISTAKE - three months ago at 75k, when I had most of the maintenance done, I decided to do a trans fluid flush. I don't remember why, because I had heard advice that doing flushes on cars with 70k+ miles can cause trans problems. Well, it did. After flushing, some days she will 'clunk'/jerk when shifting from 2nd down to 1st gear. Scarier, a few times she's done it around 4th-3rd-2nd on the highway. I guess I'm looking forward to a rebuild after 100k now? Fairly pissed about that, but should have known better.
OVERALL,
- I've taken it on long drives across the country, through the rockies, raced down the 101/110, taken many a 'spirited' scenic drive through mountains and forests, really tried to enjoy myself -- based on all these experiences, first of all the car feels safe and reliable, there have been times that have made me think "wow this car has way more grip than I thought." (However the one thing I haven't done is drive in snow, screw that.)
- There is no single part, component, or feature of the car that strikes me as inadequate or low quality, like it doesn't belong in a car trying to approach performance/luxury ... nope, it's a heavy, solid car.
Overall, I have a solid 7.5/10 impression - it's no super sports car, you have to handle it right, can feel heavy at times. But for me it's been a very reliable sedan, and very easy to have fun with... click VDC off and push the RWD... it's a seriously fun car If I could do anything, I'd trade up for a 2013- G37S to try the 7-speed auto trans...in a coupe.
If anyone has any suggestions about my trans problem, or any questions etc post em!

The freeway acceleration was definitely something I loved on my test drive. I could go from 60 to 80 in what seemed like a blink of an eye. Like almost before I had time to look down. And 60 to 100 or 80 to 100 is equally impressive. Going from 6th (I'm 6mt) to 4th (with a rev match of course) and its on like donkey Kong. Good write-up!

Nothing custom save for the wheels, which are other Infi wheels that I liked more.
Grounding kit sounds interesting too, I'm intrigued...
