Recently I had some problems with my brakes and it turns out of the passenger rear corner the outer brake pad is completely worn out, so it was pretty much metal on metal contact. So I have pulled out the brake pad and noticed that while the outer brake pad is completely gone the inner one probably still had 50-60% of the pad left. And on my rear driver side it was the same story, except the outer one wasn't completely gone but the inner one had a lot of pad left. I still need to replace the rotor at this point but I'm just wondering if what I'm seeing can be fixed, this pads were only on my car for about 3 years or around 20 thousand kms. I don't think they are suppose to wear out this fast. Thanks in advance!

 

Only possible cause for your brake wear is a faulty caliper! I'd replace the rotor and caliper and while your at it replace the pads on both left and right rear sides. Due to the heat generated with the caliper replacing all the brake fluid would also be a good idea...Gary

This sounds like a classic case of poor caliper pin lubrication. Once the wear pattern starts, the inevitable heat buildup cooks what remaining lube there is even further, resulting in even worse single sided pad wear and thus even more heat, more binding, and so on and so forth.

I'd replace both pads (as a set) and do a thorough cleaning and relube of the slider pins, as they're likely pretty cooked/varnished.

Same thing happened on my coupe about a week ago. I installed a reman rear caliper last year without any issues. During driving I head a weird scraping noise, so I dropped it off at my mechanics. I'm working on my Audi, so I didn't have time/space to look at my G, but it ended up being a stuck slide pin. Mechanic put new brake pads and lubed up everything for me. He doesn't think I need a new rotor yet, but it's possible since the brake pad was pretty much chopped up.

 

It's a common issue on the 03-06 cars, but the rear caliper slide pins tend to seize and cause the uneven brake pad wear.

Reman calipers are fairly cheap if cleaning and relubing the slide pins doesn't work. Use a quality, high temp, non-petroleum grease to lube them up.
