Power Steering Blown

So I was backing out of my garage today and I hear a loud boom and I lost power steering and all of my fluid leaked out. The steering is so tight it’s almost impossible to turn. Got to have it towed. Does anyone know how this happens? I had the pump replaced in January and the rack replaced in June.

That sounds like the check valve that bleeds off excess pressure back to the pump stopped up and it just pumped until it blew. Should be a warranty failure but if the repair shop provided parts and labor they should get it all. PITA though. They do need to check the pump though too as that's a lot of pressure if it has nowhere to go and it could have damaged the pump internals and/or the pressure side hose.

The rack is still under warranty. As for the pump I had it done at a different shop. Hopefully they will warranty it.

The pump shouldn't have been the problem so the shop that installed the rack should be able to get the rack's rebuilder to handle it if necessary. The relief valve should be internal to the rack and after enough fluid has passed through to properly operate the rack it bleeds the excess back to the reservoir.Good luck!

Sucks to hear bro. I hear you. Just had a hose connector go. Smoking coolant everywhere. Got it done right away back on the road. Hope you have another ride till it gets fixed.

Yea this sucks. I’m only at 86k miles and this is the 2nd time the steering went out. I have another car. 2014 BMW 328i. It’s alright. But i have to say. I like my G35 more.
