How do you diagnose an exhaust leak

How do you do it ?

She's throaty and loud,

I don't want to start throwing parts until I know for sure.

Put the car in the air, start the engine, and inspect the entire exhaust. If you're lowered it's probably the flex pipes on the y-pipe. Otherwise check flanges.

If you can't get the car in the air, lay on the ground and listen while a second person raises the rpms slightly.

Found the culprit. Y pipe rusting out apparently is very common.

Under the middle heat shield is steel wool spacer that eventually rubbed a hole.

Exhaust tape, and Exhaust sealant and sheet metal works until I find another Y pipe.

Problem solved.

I use a cheap halloween fog machine and tape it to the exhaust pipe and tape up the other tailpipe exit.

Let it run for 5 minutes and look where the smoke is blowing out from. Very very effective.

I don't have a fog machine. If I did I'd be throwing parties.

Maybe light a joint and tell my buddy to keep blowing smoke in the exhaust.

Also heard a shop vac and soapy water works too.

In the end it was super easy to find by sound and feel (air movement) alone.

All I do it point people in what I think might be the correct direction. If you fixed your vehicle then it's because YOU did the troubleshooting and repairs.

You fixed your car

It took 18 years of aggressive parenting, 5 years of strict apprenticeship, and a couple more years of figuring things out on my own before I was finally not the ******* of my youth. Then a couple more decades for it too really sink that my strength is inspiring others to greatness, not achieving my own greatness which is limited at best.
