Water Pump Replacement Mechanic Price Gut Check
Water Pump Replacement Mechanic Price Gut Check
I have a 2007 G35 Sedan (135k miles) and leaking coolant... I just found out from a local mechanic that the water pump needs to be replaced. Also, the drive belt squeaks a bit at cold start-up so my mechanic recommended that I replace this too.
I was quoted $1185 for both the water pump and the drive belt replacement (8 hrs of labor ($960) + parts/tax ($225)).
Does this seem like a fair price?
I'm not interested in addressing this myself as I just frankly don't have the time, unfortunately. Also, I'm located in Southern California... specifically, the South Bay area and would appreciate any recommendations for local repair shops.

I wouldn't say that is too unreasonable. On the older models there were two access panels you could open to get to the water pump and tensioner. On the later models you have to take the whole front timing cover off.
how do you know it's the w pump? i've replaced mine a few months back and the leak was coming from behind the a/c compressor. the job kinda sucks (it's not hard, just meticulous), but can be done if you've been wrenching on cars before. mine had 240k+, so it was a good opportunity to replace the main chain, tensioner, sprocket, and guides as well. honestly, 8 hours @120/hr for him to knock this out is not that bad at all.
I'd take Urban's advice too about replacing those gaskets they are made of paper and fail. I don't have an HR motor, but that is one reason why I would not buy a G from that era if I did not know those gaskets were replaced.

Thanks everyone for the perspective. I've been calling around other local shops in my area, and was able to get estimates that are ~$200 cheaper. Based on the intel gathered so far, seems like $950-1175 for the water pump and drive belt replacement is reasonable.
i'm really struggling with the w pump at that low of a mileage, honestly. it could be coming from the thermostat housing/pipe in that same area. at least jack it up and see where it's leaking from yourself before you commit to this repair.

That's a great point and will do. Thanks so much for the advice.
There has been no visible drips on the ground. Over the last few months, I've noticed that the coolant reservoir gets fairly dry every 3-4 weeks plus burning coolant smell. Then about a month ago, it's dry every 2 weeks. Thus, I figured my leak is getting worse.
The water pump leak diagnosis was from a local mechanic this past Friday. Looks like it'd be wise to get a second opinion.

honestly, not a terrible price. all the accessories and the timing cover have to come off. does the price include new pump and chains? if you want the car to last a bit more get new chains, tensioners, guides and galley gaskets while you're in there.
That price is actually a very good one, assuming the parts are included (water pump, gasket(s), new oil and filter) make sure to get OEM parts and replace the chain guides. Otherwise, you might as well use that 1,500 as a deposit on a newer car..
