Power steering fluid to use?
Power steering fluid to use?
08 sedan here, swapping out my ps pump cause it had a bad leak and threw up all its fluid onto my alternator and everywhere else. Question is what type of fluid should i be using? Some say oem others say ATF but I’m confused on if its dexron III or VI? Can anyone clear that up? Thanks!
Should say right on the reservoir cap. I have an 06 so don't want to tell you the wrong thing. But you should able to read what yours wants right off the cap. If I recall correctly mine says Dex III (but could be another car so...) and I put Valvoline Maxlife ATF fluid (Dex VI compatible) in it and haven't had problems. You can read lots of people that say they use dex vi and lots that say you shouldn't. Sorry if that doesn't help much. But start with what your cap says and figure out what you want to buy that meets that spec. Hard to go wrong by going to Nissan and asking for whatever it says if you're confused by too many options, you'll just pay more.
It's Dextron III, the power steering will use the same fluid as your transmission. This is the same for almost all vehicles 2000 or newer. There will be specialty power steering fluid available (Nissan PSF), it's just transmission fluid without the red dye added, and it comes in a smaller bottle since you never need an entire quart for a power steering system.
