Timing chain rattle??

Im not able to upload a video idk why it wont accept my video file? Whatever. This is the closest video I can find at the beginning of the video is the exact sound my g is making runs an drives fine but the rattling is bad... its been sitting i dont want to damage it even further. Any ideas? Im leaning twords the timing as the link states. A few weeks ago it did throw a vvt solenoid code so I replaced both solenoids an was good until yesterday it started rattling after a long drive home after new years didnt drive it hard or anything.. youll have to copy an paste the URL it wouldn't let me upload that either sorry it's the top video 44sec long

the guy in your reddit video posted this (unfortunate) update:

Update: it’s rod knock unfortunately, found metal shavings in the oil
However, first things first. How many miles on your G? What are your oil change intervals? What code did it pop for VVT? Is the "rattle" present only when cold or at all times?

Mine rattles slightly in the lower rpm, and I was scared it was a rod knock, but came to find out my aftermarket cat took a dump. Honeycomb is rattling around. Are you 100% sure the noise is from the top end? Jack the car up and have a helper rev it around to see if you can isolate the noise.

Its got around 161k. Oil changes around 3k-5k.p0014 is the code it threw there was a slight rattle at the time when I replaced them. Its gotten louder iv taken it by a shop to get a second opinion an they said its probably a stretched timing chain bc you only hear it twords the front of the cover. An to take it home or a shop an dont drive it or ill regret it. Iv had my several people listen to the video iv recorded an there perry confident its a stretched chain or maybe a wore tensioner. Like I said 161k an honestly iv drivin it kinda hard at times maxing out the cars speed being stupid. I will say it does 153!

p0014 is the magnet on the passenger side (bank 1) vvt cover and not the solenoid, so pretty sure that one will come back. you'll most likely will need to replace that whole cover. unfortunately, that's the b**ch of a side to do because of the pulley cover in the way and the p/s pump needing to come off. i've had both p0014/0024 codes and a junk yard replacement covers fixed that. never had any driving issues with the codes on (had them for years). up to you if you want to replace that.

at 161k, even if you're giving it the beans, i highly doubt it's the chain. i've replaced mine (water pump job) around 245k and it was pretty stretched, but nothing crazy.

btw, did you replace the solenoids with OEM ones or some chinese specials?

p.s. this thread reminds me of this one where the OP was having some rattle and p0024 (pass side): https://g35driver.com/forums/g35-sed...m-sensors.html

Iv replaced everything with oem Hitachi parts never had a issue. Last night I decided to go ahead an tear it apart an see if its a timing chain issue or what all iv got to do is remove the timing cover an im there got the whole front end off. Im in a position I have to have it fixed by Tuesday or im stranded sadly. I dont have the extra cash to take it on they wanted 2500+ to fix it

well, the good news is the worst part is behind you now lol taking that cover off is not fun...

here's my thread on when i did the pump, chain, guides, etc. if you want to give it a look: https://g35driver.com/forums/g35-sed...45k-clock.html

did you get OEM stuff from Z1? good idea to swap the pump, main chain, galley gaskets, tensioner, guides (side and top), and the crank sprocket. I have 30k mile parts I've listed if you want them on the cheap. My old engine took a dump back in September and all these parts are still on-hand. I'll cut you a good deal and will overnight them to you.

I havent ordered any parts yet I wanted to open it an make sure thats what it is. But like my friends said your going through all that effort it would be stupid noy to replace all of it. Iv got them in the cart with z1 but Im in a deadline so im gonna be forced to go though oriellys or something. Also back to the earlier when you said that guy updated an said it was a rod knock you can definitely here in that video the rattling at the very beginning is what im hearing.

that's why i suggested jacking the car up and listening for where the knock is coming from. you will hear the rod knock in the pan area. even better if you get a stethoscope. a metal bar to your ear could work also.

if this car is a keeper, i highly suggest you getting OEM parts for it. Z1 can overnight the parts as well. you'd def. want to replace the galley gaskets and i doubt o'reilly has those.

Yeah but in the video you can hear a rattle an than the clear as day rod knock mines definitely not knocking its just a rattle. Doesn't affect it driving or anything. An yeah its a keeper I dont plan on selling it anytime soon I absolutely love this car both my other cars have taken a **** an this is still going till now. I can only imagine what the overnight shipping costs😅

it'll probably be less than $100 and well worth it, imho. also, make sure the rattle isn't one of the cats. you'd be surprised...
