I strongly doubt your service manager is correct. My '05 has had all oil changes done at the dealership for 30,000 miles with conventional Castrol 5W-30 and the car burns up 4 quarts every 3750 miles.

Also, my oil changes are $45 + tax and include a vacuum and wash. Not a bad deal considering
