2007 6 speed coupe gas gauge always reads empty

for some reason my gas gauge will work like once a month but always reads empty most of the time is there something i can do with out having to go to the dealer or should i just go there and get it under warrnt.

In my sedan the gas gauge port is under the back seat. If you feel up to it, you could just pull it and move the float to see if it's working.
