If I understand you correctly, you put the car in neutral an shut it off there. Often automatics have a little tab you can remove somewhere to stick a key or other long, thin piece into in order to release the shift lock mechanism and enable you to shift it while the vehicle is turned off, or sometimes when it refuses to move into a specific gear.

Run on sentences ftw.

This happened to me when I had my maxima. As stupid as it sounds when I picked my car up after an install I shifted into gear it was fine and then it was giving me trouble I got home and barely got it into gear, I got back to the shop somehow and what does the installer pull out? His little screw driver left in the shifter under the boot, lol. Worth to check.

My G35 has a little "shift key" or "shift lock" tab on the left side by the boot. A little black square tab that you can lift up. Might look into that little guy as well. I personally have never used it but it obviously has something to do with the shifting but would be rarely used.
