Gas Gauge Needle on Wrong Side of Pin
Gas Gauge Needle on Wrong Side of Pin
Yesterday I go out to start the G. Fires on 2-3 cylinders then dies, like I should have held the starter on for another 1/2 second. So I crank again. It just cranks, no fire in the cylinders. Figure it's flooded. Go inside for 5 minutes. Try cranking again. All I get is RRRRRRR ..RRRRR. still not fireing.
So I take my old trusty '97 Max to work. Get home after work. The G still won't start. I have AAA tow it to the local dealer.
Today the dealer calls to say it starts up, no codes, feul pressure is fine, no leaky injectors. He can't find anything but he cleans the injectors and the MAF and idle air learn. Also changes the oil in case gas leaked down ino the sump with all the cranking I did. Cost $407.
Car run but here's the problem- the gas gauge needle is rotated 200+ deg. counter clockwise against the stop pin below empty. The tank is full. Only 10 miles on the full tank. The dealer says it happened when I was cranking the motor. He wants $850 for a new gauge cluster. There has to be a way to fix this without buying a whole new cluster. I searched the site and found a reference to a magent trick but couldn't find any details.
So guys can I fix this gauge or do I dive with no gas gauge?

I ended up taking it to my friends shop that does all my body work and anything I don't have time to do or don't want to do. I can't remember how much he charged me but it wasn't a lot. I've had no more problems with it since then.
