exact same symptoms, except it was my father driving... so I don't exactly know what he may have done wrong. Jumping straight to fuses. Didn't know about the hidden fuse compartment behind the battery. I appreciate your results and your updates!

twilightsedan, just wanted to say thank you so very much, this issue gave me great heartache for many hours, but when checking the fuse you indicated, i was able to discover the source.

Almost literally same situation on a 2008 FX35. Except I swapped to a cheap LED bulb in reverse lights. Lights worked fine when I finished swapping them out no problems. The next day and a few start and stops the cel came on. Shut car off and it would not restart. Used scan tool and pulled a p1610 p1614 u1000 u1001. Was able to clear the p codes but not the u codes. Car would not start. Several hours reading through posts all over the web and nothing seemed to work. Checked all the typical fuses (footwell and in front of battery). I did have an aftermarket Directed electronics remote start in the vehicle and it hasn’t been starting for awhile anyway. Really feel like this was the problem, I removed the entire system and still same no start. I was so lost on this until I found this very post, thank god! I had seen this black cover behind the battery but assumed it was an evap canister or something. Lo and behold it held several fuses in which the “AT CONT” fuse which was blown. Replaced and car started right up!!!! Cleared the I codes and they actually stayed cleared now. Man I am so thankful you wrote this in 2011 for me to find 9 years later. You are the man!
