5at manual mode issue

I’m new the the site, but I have a 2006 5at g35 coupe that I have had for a few months. When I flip into manual mode (or tiptronic whatever you wanna call it) I cannot shift out of 1st gear, the issue has gotten more and more frequent the longer I own it but will sometimes fix itself and shift fine. Other times when I switch to manual mode the tranny will start downshifting all the way back to first revving into high rpms until I catch it and return to D. Any tips or advice would be appreciated, I’m thinking electrical problem with the shifter assembly area??
I’ve also polished the at grounds on top of the timing cover.

As I recall, there is a method in the FSM to test the manual mode gate shift functioning. I had an 05 sedan that the MM downshift almost never worked. I think it was a problem with the small momentary switches inside the shifter assembly, but I sold the car as-is months ago. Never fixed it.
I currently have an 04 sedan, and I will say that adding a ground strap (or grounding kit) definitely makes the trans shift better. I ran a 6awg ground wire from the chassis ground point under the coolant reservoir to one of the starter bolts, and another from the negative battery terminal to the front timing cover ground points. This alone made the car more responsive and MM shifts much faster.

Does the new one have shifting issues in mm? Guess I should start reading up on the FSM, hopefully I don’t have to replace the shifter assembly I just got this car!

Nope, MM works fantastic in my 04.
Could be something with the momentary switches in the shifter assembly. The FSM should tell you how to check the I think (?)

I took a look at the FSM and found the manual mode switch portion, it was just too difficult for me to follow. I might just have to look into selling...

My 05 would do this too every now and then but has been happening a lot more recently. The issue is not with the switch. It has more to do with the ECU detecting a fault and locking out the MM mode until it is reset, when u turn the key off and on again. I have never gotten the system to work again on its own. It always requires me to restart the car. Most of the time that has fixed my MM issue.

Now, when I first start the car I will immediately switch to MM mode before driving. If it doesnt engage, I turn the key fully off and back on and try again. If it engages, I know its good for the rest of the drive. It never fails while Im driving.

Drove to work this am and the thing shifted perfectly but sure enough on my way home it didn’t want to shift at all. With my issue i can always switch over to mm and it will display my gear ie “1M” but won’t upshift. Occasionally it will shift once and will refuse to shift into any higher gear.

Hmm....I noticed you previously said your car will downshift on its own in MM mode. sounds like your issue can possibly be the shifter microswitches themselves.

Here is a pic of the switches in my car. I would advise u to open yours up and inspect them. Make sure they arent faulty or out of adjustment. U can even go for a drive with the switches exposed so you can manually click them just for testing purposes. If you wanna be 100% sure you don’t have a bad switch you can even unplug(if possible) the switches or even cut the wires to them. U can always resolder the wires after u are done troubleshooting.

I believe I tried shifting with the wires exposed and I could hear the switch for up shifting click yet nothing happened. Does this mean i need to replace the assembly?

If u can hear the switch clicking then its probably good. Im kinda **** about that kinda stuff and wont be satisfied until Ive tested the switch with a multimeter. I like to be 100% sure before I move on.

If the switches are good, then that means the assembly is good. U probably have an issue with the transmission ECU or whatever ECU controls the MM functions.

while you're in there messing with the switches, it's a simple matter to swap the wires to reverse the mm shift pattern to pull for upshift, push to downshift. so much more intuitive than push to upshift. i did it so long ago i can't remember exactly how i did it but there's a diy on this site about the easiest way to either cut or unplug the wires to execute the swap. if you've gone to enough trouble to get the thing open that far and fool with the switches and wires, might as well finish it off with a nice mod.
