Removed CAI and gained more power from spacer...

I recently added an AAM plenum spacer to my list of NA mods. I had been warned not to add a spacer with a CAI on the G, because it would make the car run even more lean. I did it anyway. I noticed a slight gain from the spacer and was happy. I recently took off my intake for a random reason and...the car felt much for powerful. It felt like I had awakened a beast (lol)! My exahaust sounds louder like im making more power, but maybe its because I cant hear the sucking sound of the injen intake

Can anyone offer any advice on what mix of NA mods affect car running lean/rich?

Whats the worst combo for running lean and vice versa?

because all cold air intakes do is make it harder for the car to breathe...you might make some nominal gains up top but not until you are doing 70 mph

The Injen intake sounds better and performs better when made into a short ram. Dont use your lower piping, and just use the pipe that comes from the throttle body down to the filter. CAI's suck

Please try to post in the correct sections. More than just 2003-2007 Coupe owners could contribute or learn from this thread. I've already moved several of your threads.

It's not surprising. Most people seem to find the same results after swapping out their CAI or POP style intake for the OEM airbox. The stock system is neither sexy looking nor sounding, but it seems to offer the best driveability.

My guess is the difference you're feeling is in the initial surge of power with the OEM system from idle to 4000rpms and that there's no disecernable difference in power above 4000rpms.

Not surprised. Today's cars have really well designed air boxes.

Just replace the stock air filter element with a high flow panel such as My STREAMLINE and you will have the most efficient intake you can buy at any price.

when adding substantial breather mods you will run lean and performance will suffer unless you address A/F ratio... my most recent encounter (even though its been quite a while) was after installing HFC... the car was gutless. At 70 on the fwy I could floor it and accelerate about 1 addition mph in 15 seconds... had a 2nd ECU re-flash (after it was determined car was running lean, as suspected), added fuel to get the A/F in spec and gain very noticeable trq!

The same thing has happened to many, many people that install mods and don't tune. The problem is it gets unwarranted reports that the mod doesn’t work. If you run lean your ECU will react. Get the A/F ratio proper and you will see gains.

Long ram intake have been proven ineffective with spacer eons ago… There have been many dyno tests that show this and Tony (Motordyne) has indicated as such several times.

On a final note – people keep saying CAI suck… CAI isn’t what sucks… An intake that brings in cold air is always good. Stuffing you intake filter down near the ground is what sucks. Radiant heat from the ground has been tested to be on avg 20 degrees hotter than ambient temps near the grille. Use a Z-Tube with cone filter (or stock air box) with plenum spacer and you will see gains. If you add hi-flow cats, free flowing exhaust or both, you will probably need to adjust the A/F… if you don’t it’s not the mods screwing things up it’s your ECU.

I could be wrong, but I thought there were several dyno runs made over the last couple of years with only basic plenum spacer and Stillen/Ztube mods to show any differences. The intake changes were shown to have only a little effect but there were measurable gains with a spacer.

Of course, long ram induction CAI, etc. may have some adverse effects under some conditions and for most are probably just best avoided if you don't have a full understanding of what it is doing under different conditions and RPM ranges.

But normally, not until you get into exhaust changes does AF ratio become a real concern.
