Z tube install
Z tube install
I'm new member of the proud G35 owner's club and am looking to make a few mods. I'm interested in mods that don't void the warranty and have seen a couple of discussion threads regarding the "Z tube" and popchargers; however, they discussed the two together versus separate. In those threads, it discussed resetting the ECU.
My question...If I install a Z tube do I need to make any other changes to the car?
Thanks

Re: Z tube install
no not really. i added the z tube to mine, by itself, without any problem. i did do the ecu reset though, and i would recommend that you do it too,

Re: Z tube install
No it won't void your warranty, it just clears out your error codes and makes you have to reset your radio stations. It may also clear out the shifting points adaptation algorithms which, from what some Nissan techs tell me, operates in about a 50 mile or 50 minute time frame.
The MAF will react to any intake air differences within seconds, so unless you're trying to clear out your tranny's shift point memories, don't bother.

Thanks. I notice you have a 2004 coupe 5AT. Did you stay with the original tranny settings or clear yours? I'll get my last few (yeah right) questions out based on your listed mods...
- Does the popcharger mess with your warranty?
- What is a plenum?
Thanks again.

Re: Z tube install
I've never done an ECU reset. The whole idea is bunk. At wide open throttle the car doesn't even know what your driving habits are. At WOT it operates on a completely different mindset, so it doesn't matter what your tranny or ECU has "learned".
Even at normal conditions the TCU/ECU is operating its shift points based on your driving habits during the last 50 miles/50 minutes or so, according to what I've read a couple of Nissan techs post on the matter. Thus, even if you do reset, to get the conditions the "resetting crowd" want, you'd have to reset it every 50 minutes/50 miles. They say it's so you get "the most aggresive shifting possible". Well, when I'm WOT it shifts at redline anyway, so who cares? If I want aggresive shifting, I floor it, and the reset is ignored. It's a myth from what I can discern. The 6 speed manual guys that reset is even more vexing. Since the MAF operates in seconds, what will resetting do for them? The can't wait 5 seconds? lol.
The pop charger will not mess with your warranty unless you botch the install and break something. Be careful your Z tube doesn't rub up against your air condition line. Mine did and I had to do some creative bending of the bracket the Pop charger came with, and add a few washers to get it to clear.
The plenum everyone talks about is the metal piece that covers your intake manifold and you'll see it if you take your plastic useless engine cover off. Our stock plenum has an aggresive angle and deprives your two fore cylinders of air. By opening this up, you get more air. Go to http://www.crawfordz.com and Doug has a video you can watch describing the whole thing. Doug is a great guy and if you call him he'll be happy to talk to you about it. Again, it will not mess with your warranty unless you botch it up. Even then, it won't void your whole warranty, you may just be denied a repair who's damage was caused by the mod itself. That's true with any mod. NOTHING voids ALL of your warranty. But if you do something that causes a problem, that particular problem will not be covered because you messed with it.

Wow, you've been more helpful than I could have imagined. This forum concept is really cool.
What HP do you think you got from each of your mods? And, what mpg "cost" do you think it had? Not that I'm that damn worried about the mpg - mostly curiosity.
Thanks a ton dude!

No problem. I figured 3, 4, maybe 5 HP from the Z tube/Pop charger combo at the upper RPM range. I'll never go to a dyno so I don't know for sure, but I did post some times on the GTechComp first impressions thread. I'll re-run everything again under the exact same configuration after my plenum and post again.
My NET horsepower was 199, but that's not comparable to a dyno because net is after drag from the road and wind too, and I just guessed on my weight. Check out the thread and draw your own conclusions. The plenum is definitely the biggest bang for your buck, IMHO.
