Best Intake Could be...
Best Intake Could be...
OK, so after dyno day we realized that the Ztube is what gives MOST of the power gains from the stock intake.
Popcharger vs Stock Airbox was inconlusive because 4300-5750 the popcharger was up 3hp and torque but stock airbox was up 3hp and torque 57500-redline.
Also, it seems to be common conseption that as far as filtering dirt, the paper filter will filter better than any oil filter.
So..what if you simply pulled out the stock airbox and then the resonator thats left (held by a 16foot long screw) then patched the whole on the stock airbox somehow.
This would leave u with the stock airbox and filter but without the resonator blocking airflow.
What do u guys think?? Could this be not only the best filtering method but offer the most gain too??

Re: Best Intake Could be...
I pulled the drain/resonator out of the car completely and left the hole open for add'l cold air flow. It may make things worse for all I know but since there is all that air under the box from the injen previsoulsly being in there and having had removed the foam from the below the grill - there is tons of air going into there (probably slows my trap speeds down tho overall).
I have better sound than I thought it should have so maybe that is why? I may test it again by shoving a rubber ball in there or something and going to the beer store...

Re: Best Intake Could be...
According to most of the oil/cotton filter companies, the paper filter will do equally early on, but after a couple thousand miles the oil filters actually IMPROVE their filtering and flow capabilities.
What's also inconclusive is how the CAI fares against the stock unit while actually traveling down the road. The dyno did not simulate this, and it wasn't clear whether or not y'all had your hoods open or shut which would also confound things.

-fish,
I've heard and read that the oil filters actually filter more debris out of the air when they are a little dirty. Why then doesn't the K&N kit come with a small bag of sand for you to sprinkle over your air filter?
301-bhp!!! ...and growing!

Re: Best Intake Could be...
No this was all hypothetical from me. The Ztube with Stock airbox (and grounding kit) was modded. But none with the resonator removed.

Hey X,
Can you point us in the direction of how you came to this solution? I guess a very dirty, clogged up K&N might filter better than a paper element but that comes with a direct impact on flow.

Re: Best Intake Could be...
the oil filters do filter better when dirty...the dirt sticks to the oil and uses a filtering process similar to natural springs (dirt sticks to dirt)
but the question is...at what point does it become equal to a paper filter and which allows more airflow at that point.
by the way...i drove 816miles today on 35.9gallons of gas (22.7mpg) and half the trip was 95+ with AC on. That same trip with stock intake took 2 1/4 tanks on 80degree days with no AC.

Re: Best Intake Could be...
I think I read somewhere quite a while ago that the K&N with about 1/8" of crud on the surface has the same flow as a paper filter. Not positive however.
