Stillen Exhaust making pop sounds?
I don't know how to really explain it, but my Stillen exhaust has been making popping sounds after reving, and when driving and shifiting in 1st gear, and letting the gas go. I've had the exhaust for about 4 months and this just recently started happening on my 6mt sedan...is this normal? Or is something wrong with the fitting? Exhaust leak?
Re: Stillen Exhaust making pop sounds?
sounds like a backfire.. i had same thing happened on my previous ride when i had no cat.. not too sure if it's a good or bad thing.. can someone elaborate?

Gotchaa,
Mine does that a little bit too, but it sounds more like a "burble." I think that's going to happen on an exhaust that is less restrictive than the OEM pipes. I'm quite sure its normal...

Re: Stillen Exhaust making pop sounds?
Its typically caused by an over-rich condition. If its more than a burble and its something new, I would take it in for a A/F/Timing diagnostic. I've had the Stillen exhaust for 6 months and never a pop or backfire.

I've got Stsillen Dual (sedan) and Crawford hi-flo cats.
I've noticed a "burbling" sound on the exhaust at idle. Not unike my old 390 V8, pleasant - but disconcerting to those who are used to "quieter" exhausts.
When I took my sedan down to TechnoSquare, Tadashi played with the car while doing the ECU. He stood behind t he car and scratched his head... he had not heard any other G doing this. It didn't bother him too much... but if it was because the fuel was too rich, Tadashi could have fixed that then and there.
He actually suggested that I change out my spark plugs, going one step colder.

I guess it is a burbling sound. I've been thinking about the technosquare, I've got a 6MT and wondering if the ECU programming would maximize the exhausts performance. Not sure if AT and MT are the same, but I've got the the z-tube and stillen cai as well, and wondering if it's worth the investment?
SoCalTed Did you end up changing your plugs?

Re: Stillen Exhaust making pop sounds?
This sound is normal with any engine. When you rev up an engine, and then back off, there is fuel coming into the exhaust that has not yet burned. It ignites, and that's the sound you hear. You don't hear it with stock exhaust systems because they are tuned to hid that sound. Stand behind a Harly Davidson (mine for instance) with a modified exhaust. Most Harleys have a modified exhaust, and you'll hear what I mean. Personally, I like that sound. But, it's entirely normal and nothing to worry about.
BTW, I have a TSU ECU, and this did nothing to alter the pop-pop sound. Nor, did I expect it to.
