New performance cats or stripped out stock?!

I was wondering if there would be any performance difference or any reason to go one way or the other. As always with my G money is not the reason for concern because any mod that i will be doing to a $35k automobile i will be doing RIGHT and not taking cheap ways out. Will stripped out cats be obnoxiously loud (like test pipes?) Will high performance (crawford maybe) cats be loud? I have heard that high performacne cats can only be expected to last about 25k miles.... which i dont really want, but is this tru of all high performance cats? Also..... would stripped out cats run this same risk of failure fater X amount of miles? What would you do and why if both were options? (whatever i do will be professionally installed by a reputable shop in the houston area)

Re: New performance cats or stripped out stock?!

One thing to think about... The stock cats at Orlando Infiniti run about $850 each w/o installation. If you gut them, you will not be able to return the car back to stock in the future. I posted a while back that gutting the stock cats might be a good option (free), but after I thought about my statements, it might actually be a bad idea.

Then again, you "might" be able to p/u some stock cats pretty cheaply from someone who doesn't care about this issue. I'd imagine that you could get equivalent gains by adding straight pipes or by gutting the stock cats.

The above statements are only my take on the issue. If you disagree with anything I typed then you are 100% right!

Re: New performance cats or stripped out stock?!

what about noise? performance VS high flow cats.... i didnt think about the fact that it will EVENTUALLY cost me 1600 dollars to get rid of the car if i gut the stock cats.... its kinda like a save a little now... or spend a LOT later. I would also worry about finding a place to pass me on emissions and possibly having to return the car to stock to pass (impossible with performance cats)

Re: New performance cats or stripped out stock?!

If you go with high flow cats...DONT...I repeat...DONT get the Randomtechnoligy cats....It will be hit and miss if they fail or not .They are the best flowing...but why spend $500.00 to $600.00 for them and have them fail . I had 1500 miles on mine and they collapsed .Some guys only gor 300 miles and they went bad . The tinny rasp is terrible with RT cats . I gutted mine and put them back in and are a little loader .Took them out and put in La Bree resonated test pipes . Got rid of some of the tinny sound but not all of it . I may sell my RT gutted cats or try to weld some diff. resonaters on them

Couldnt afford it when young...gonna play when Im old

Re: New performance cats or stripped out stock?!

Damm, I just got my borla exhaust in and want to do the test pipe's or cats at the same time I install the exhaust but am caught up on what to get. I dont have enough money for the resonated cats or test pipe's so will be going with non resonated helix or kinetix test pipe's. I here different things on the sound, some saying its horrible some saying it sounds good I guess its just preference. between the two, what would you guys get or do in my position? Thanks Martin

Re: New performance cats or stripped out stock?!

no way man

y advice is to do nothign to the stockers, and just get labree resonated pipes (just because they will help - but eliminate - the rasp that you will encounter) for around 360.

THe car will get louder, considerably so if you go with an aftermarket exhaust as well

Re: New performance cats or stripped out stock?!

ive arleady decided that im going to run cats...... i wont be able to pass inspection if i run test pipes. I'm guessing that everyone probably has the same laws in their states as we do here in texas, but i know a lot of kits who have had to get exhaust put back on (welded) just so their cars could pass inspection after cutting off exhaust at the headers.

Re: New performance cats or stripped out stock?!

so wait, the test pipes are fully bolt on rite? No cutting or welding like you just mentioned raz? Cause I cant be doing all of that on a leased car, I was planning on just swapping out for stock cats when I have to go for my inspection. Choi lemme know how it sounds and goes. What cats are you putting in?

Re: New performance cats or stripped out stock?!

o sorry to alarm u lol... on the g it is a bolt on... but on a lot of cars (240's, friend's dodge ram, friend's mustang) they required welding to get em back on. I am about 99% sure that on wrx's they bolt on too... so probably a lot of the newer performance cars are direct bolt on replacements (i dunno tho... im just a dumb 17 year old who hasnt been in the loop with cars for very long.... i mean whats the point when u dont have a license..)
